"Something like that. It may not always be so clear, as you must always do what is right, but in general terms. Yes, that's it."

"Why does House go before Realm? Or self after King?" The Boy said, struggling in a quicksand of minutiae.

Brandon stayed silent while he thought about the fact that Odhar might not live all that long, grimacing slightly. Roland would do well he knew as the Lord Paramount. He thought about the day he first met Lord Odhar, which was just after he had learned that the Lord Royce at that time had died, he wasn't quite clear on that though. His half-brother had talked at lenght about the Royce family on their ride towards what they thought would be Odhar Royce's rescue, which brought him to remember.. "Oh, this could be good," he thought.

"Those are good questions to be always asking yourself, Cyrus. Your House comes first because you rule, but also serve, your family. Your purpose as a lord or head of a household is to provide the best outcome for your House. Next comes your realm or more specifically in your case, your Lord Paramount. This is because your family is sworn to the Lord Paramount, and if he calls you must answer... In most cases. Your Lord Paramount is sworn to the King, and all authority flows from him, so in serving your Lord you almost serve the King. Finally comes self, as you should never concern yourself with your own personal standing before those you serve."

"Roland, whatever happened to the late Lord Royce's wife?" Brandon asked quietly.

"Jon's wife, Doria? I think the closely timed deaths of her sister, Emelia, and Jon himself drove her into a deep misery. All the while, her body weakened too. She became withdrawn, quiet, and sickly. She's been living at Runestone in comfort, but I haven't seen her in more than a year now."

"What if your Lord fights against the King?" Cyrus asked.

Roland nodded. "Then you must choose what is right, as opposed to what is best for you. You must ask yourself why they fight, and judge what the correct path is."

"Oh. I thought the King was always right." The boy said, shaking his head, and wondering why he was all wrong.

"He should be, Cyrus. You hope so, but you can see from my situation that sometimes the King can be wrong."

Cyrus shrugged. "Okay." He said quietly.

"I have kind of agreed on teaching the Queen some languages for the time being, so I guess I will be staying her for a while. The King is planning on travelling to the North and I've never seen a wall of ice before," Brandon said.
