"I do," Maekar said. "Gods, I wish I could get out of this wretched bed."
He wanted to kiss her in spite of all their quarrels. More than that, he wanted to do something else, but he knew he couldn't manage it yet.
"I wonder what will put a smile on that sulky face of yours?"

Ganieda waited for a few hours before she entered the tent again, sure that Myrrah had gone.
"Are all your conversation with your wife that warm?"

He laughed and winced at the pain.
"Yes, they are much the same. We married for duty," Maekar said. "My cousin the queen had to bind House Reed to her and so I had to play the sacrificial lamb."

"As all good families should do. I'm sure that is is lovely when she thaws up, but then she is from the North."

"Yes. I thought it was only Starks who had hearts of ice but it seems the same is true of the Reeds. I've no idea if she will ever thaw."
He stopped and smiled at her.
"You put her to shame already."

She laughed.
"Im not so stereotypical."

"What are you then?" Maekar asked. "I'm intrigued."

She thought for a moment. "Free." She said finally.

Maekar smiled.
"Lucky woman. I am chained to the queen by affection and duty, and also to a woman I desire but do not love. Freedom is not even given to dragons, not even bastards. Do you have no kin to command your affection or loyalty?"

"Freedom is taken as it is given. You can only truly be free if you beleive that you are doing people favours when you do something for them. If people ask you to do something you chose to do it, not they chose you do it for them."

Maekar sighed.
"It doesn't work that way for me. If the queen asks me for something, I must obey her. I would, anyway, but I'm in no position simply to please myself. My livelihood depends on my cousins, especially now I've lost the bloody arm."

She smiled.
"Its in your frame of mind. You take it how you feel like, even if you end up doing a really downgrading job. And it could be worse, it might not have been your arm."

At first Maekar was going to say something morose and self-pitying since he was extremely worried about his future, but then he rallied with another kind of comment altogether.
"You mean such as my manhood?"

She raised her eyebrow slightly.
"Well if that had been lost then you wouldnt be much use would you?" She said with obvious amusement.

He grinned at her. Thinking about what they might do together had improved his mood a little.
"Not to you. I'd hate to think I was of no use to you, Mistress Ganieda. I'd prove it to you now if I could."
