Ser Aerys was met by Maekar Blackfyre, clothed in dark leather and mail and looking decidedly unhappy. "Ser Aerys," he said coolly. "Where is Ser Aegon? The queen was under the impression that he was coming to her in person?" Aerys inclined his head in deference. "He would have my lord Maekar. However the Prince and his men have been halted by forces - Northmen I believe - led by William Karstark."

She contineud to smile at him, though it felt false to do so when he was so obviously hurting.
"That's good, very good in fact. I will have it announced that you are back on the Small Council and indeed I will wish to speak with the Small Council as a whole once we've dealt with matters here at Moat Cailin. It's past time we had a proper meeting. In the meantime, I need you use the time we have to consider spreading your net in the lands below the Moat. I would like to know what is the situation at or near Harrenhall, if you can find out."

Ser Aerys shook his head.
"I do not know Lord Maekar. Why does Prince Aegon's force of 300 men moving to join the Queen's forces need to be confronted and halted by 2,000 odd men?"
He stopped speaking with a look of concern beginning to appear on his lined face.
"Surely this was not by the order of Queen Rhaenys."

"Certainly not! I'd know, if it were so. We will have to investigate this grave matter. Will you trust me to speak with the Queen's voice, Ser Aerys?" Maekar asked.

Aerys looked with uncertainty at Maekar. The old knight looked suddenly weary.
"Then if Rhaenys did not order it, why would William Karstark suddenly take it into his own hands to seek to confront us? Especially when Aegon was marching to assist the Queen's forces here.
"I do not like the smell of this Lord Maekar. It smacks of treachery and mayhap not at the behest of Her Grace either.
"In light of the circumstances, if it would please you, my master bade me to speak with the Queen directly. I must seek instructions from the Queen to deliver to the Prince. Wherever he is."

"As you will. There must be some treachery afoot, as you say. Come with me."
Maekar led Aerys into the queen's presence.
"Your Grace, Ser Aerys Velaryon is here with word from Aegon. He's been delayed by Lord Karkstar," he said.
Rhaenys looked from one to the other in surprise.
"Why? How?" She asked, indicating that Aerys should speak.

Aerys knelt.
"Your Grace. I know not why, but Prince Aegon's force was marching south from Winterfell to join you when he was confronted by a very large force of northmen flying the banners of Karstark. Given that our forces should be marching south..not north and the fact he was heavily outnumbered, the Prince concluded that there some sort of treachery against him and was forced to withdraw north.
"Otherwise he would be here with you now." he finished.

Rhaenys was pleased Aegon had kept faith with her but puzzled by Karstark's actions, of which she knew nothing.
"Strange," she said. "I gave no orders to that effect. I've not even spoke to Karstark, really. I must deal with his matter in person, I see. Do you anything else at all, before we set out?"

Aerys shook his head.
"Only that the Prince was withdrawing as rapidly as he could. Not surprising given the overwhelming odds against him."

"Very good Your Grace. I ask that I might accompany you."

"It was my intention that you should," she told Aerys. "Ready yourself with all haste. Maekar, I need men. Explain the position to Selwyn. He will know what numbers can and should be spared."
Maekar hurried away.
"What a bloody nuisance," said Rhaenys to Aerys. "Dont' worry, we'll clear this up, ser."
