"My dear this would be so much easier if I did note hate him so much. Did I pass on a change to save his life? Did I not try hard enough because of that loathing? I think Callen would have spared him if he had not fought but..." Piers looks at Lilith, "I have only failed Baldwin once... no twice."

Lilith laughed softly and ruefully. "My love, you are manifesting something strangely like an overwrought conscious and it doesn't suit you. 'What Baldwin might have wanted' is no way for you to run your life. You honored Baldwin's wishes by not killing the bastard." Piers flicked his eyes towards her.
"Allard, for all the saintliness of his belated mother, was a bastard. You are Baldwin's heir of the mind. He wanted you to have your own family, as you have now. Cherish us and let Allard's ghost rot in all seven helsl. I know despair my lord. It is not easy to wrangle but if necessary, it can be herded like a cat. Push this black beast away. The land has other matters that confront it."

Piers smiles at Lilith, "I do not like the taste of failure. It is a bitter and unusual taste to my mouth. And regardless of who I failed, it is a failure none the less."
Shruging he continued, "It will pass, the last time I failed I had a physical wound as well that distracted me from this wound to my pride." Piers reaches out a hand and touches Lilith. "At least I will have somthing to distract me from this grevious wound." He laughed.

Lilith smiled a very sultry smile. "I think I will be able to prove to you that your, ahem, pride is not too wounded."

After a pause, Lilith added, "Don't fear failure, it just means that you have tried something not within your usual set of skills. I have hundreds of failures on my conscience, men who will never see their families again because of something I didn't do, did wrong, or didn't know how to do. I always like to think they look over the next people I meet. "
She paused, "Baldwin was a superb judge of your talents, and gave you a long leash to accomplish the tasks he set. Failure just means you are walking new paths that haven't been laid out for you."
She turned contemplative. "One of these days it would be good to take some time to talk about the paths we could travel. We are so busy with the day to day it is hard to see beyond the next few steps."
