Nute Rayder stirred the liquid in the great iron pot carefully. He liked cooking; it made him happy, and it made those who ate happy too. And there is no better place to catch gossip than around a cookfire.
This particular fire was in the Westerlands encampment, but Nute had been all across the army in the last few weeks. His round body and pointed teeth combined with the jovial personality he affected made him a hard man to forget. But at the same time, he was a wildling -- a savage, unimportant, beneath the interest of the nobles. And that was exactly how Nute wanted it. Even if one of the high and mighty southron spymasters noticed exactly what he was doing, they would assume he was just someone else's pawn. Nute grinned just thinking about it.
Everywhere he went, Nute cooked and drank and diced, joking and spreading gossip and listening to what the soldiers had to say. And they told him more than they realized... lords so-and-so quarrelled while Tym stood on guard duty, or Jyck's captain snuck out into the woods in the middle of the night when he thought no one was watching.
And some of these men Nute would take aside, and offer coin or a favor to do some things for him. Nothing major, of course. Just listen and watch, and you'll bring home a few extra gold pieces for Bessy back home. And where did the wildling get so much gold? Nute would just grin and say that lady fortune always provided just enough, while he sold valuable northern goods and won every gambling bet he ever took.
Toothy Nute smiled. Sow the seeds, sow the seeds.
