"I agree. We must secure the realm before we deal with any disputes over lands and borders. Don't worry, Ser Owen, I will issue a decree that no man who has knelt to me may attempt to steal another man's land while the Cult remains in Westeros, and that all such matters will be dealt with in Court. Any man who disobeys this rule will be punished."

"Good," Owen said with a nod. "I feel more comfortable with my oath now that you've said as much. I've sworn my oath, your grace, is there naught more I might do for you?"

"Only to try and find out what has become of your father. I need the stability of a lord ruling in the West, Ser Owen. Your position is somewhat awkward until we know the truth. Speak with Lord Marbrand, my Master of Whispers. He will help you."

"Marbrand?" Owen asked rhetorically, unable to hide his dismay. "My Queen, I must caution you against this man. He betrayed my Lord father to Thatcher, no doubt he would seek to do the same to you. He is a slimy, vile man, unworthy of the title he bears," he said, his mane of gold hair swinging about wildly, so violently did he shake his head.

Rhaneys sighed.
"I know nothing of those events, Ser Owen. I was, as you know, raised in Sothorys, not Westeros. I have already given Marbrand the title and responsibilities and cannot go back on my word now. However, if you will furnish me with more details, perhaps the testimony of someone who witnessed the events, I will speak with Lord Marbrand and see if some recompense can be made."

"I can give you few details, as I was not there and have not spoken to the man, nor do I wish to. All I can tell you is that the man is the worst kind of coward, and a turncloak. He has not a drop of honor in him. I seek no compensation for vile deeds, though vengeance may well be another matter. When all this is sorted out, I would seek a new Lord of Ashemark, though again, I speak not for my father, should he yet live. Of course, I speak of days far ahead, once things have been put back to right."

She began to worry that Ser Owen would think her unduly favouring a man he considered his enemy. It would not do, though she had given Marbrand her word and must keep it.
"As I said, I am in no position to turn against Lord Marbrand now. I need certain of his talents at my disposal. However, we will investigate these grave matters in depth when things are more settled. In the meantime, since you clearly cannot speak with Marbrand with regard to your father's disappearance, I suggest you speak with my brother Saenerys about gathering information. He has some abilities in that area too, and I know he will assist any man I send to him."

"Aye, well appreciated. I thank you sincerely, my Queen, it would be good to know what has become of the Lord of the West, one way or the other. Do you know where your brother might be found?"

"At his own tent, I'll wager. Give him this, and he will know you come with my blessing."
Rhaenys took off a small ring with a dragon head crest and handed it to Owen.

Owen took the ring, though he hoped the man would have a bit of time for a Lannister, trinket or no. "Thank you, your Grace. If you've nothing more of me, I think I will go in search of your brother."

"I wish you luck finding your father," she said warmly. "Come and see me again when we reach Castle Black. I want to be on good terms with my lords."
