OK here's my attempt to summarise roughly 40 IC years of Wormage. Some of the early stuff is kinda mysterious to me too.
Daena and Zachary (son) were murdered (possibly by the Cult of The Dead God - though I know nothing about them). Alessa Lannister (daughter) survived this. Riverrun was lost. Went quiet for several years, lived comfortable life in Lannisport, controlling business etc. Daughter Alessa married Lord Rhaegar Velaryon, had children Monterys and Lyonel. At some stage Steffen became involved with some shady characters. Was offered Harrenhal in return for doing... very little other than avoiding interfering. Shady characters played Steffen false, he goes back into his quiet Lannisport life. Peaceful life shattered by Basilisk Invasion which hits Lannisport first. Steffen fled the scene in a cowardly fashion, leaving his home and household to be destroyed. Makes journey East via Riverrun. Hears about the rebellion of Lord Rhaegar (his goodson) at Dragonstone. Makes his way there. Rhaegar and Steffen (both having Targaryen links) decide that they will follow only a true Targaryen King. Steffen sets off from the doomed Dragonstone to Braavos. Puts up with Aemon Targaryen's nonsense for a few months (pushing to become his future hand when he ascends his rightful throne), in which time Dragonstone stormed and defeated etc. Flees one night for King's Landing. Wanders in whistling as if nothing had happened, talks with Cedric Lannister (his cousin, the hand), goes back to West to attempt to start again. During the fifteen year Time-jump which has lead us to our current time, he married the elder of the orphaned Marbrand children (although she was like 30/40 years his junior). Acts as patriarch of Ashemark whilst Lord Dudley grew up. Daughter Alessa and her Velaryon sons (disinherited after Rhaegar's treachery) also live at Keep. Cosy little family life for years, went to 'King Cedric' as an advisor when he succeded. Carries on in his own way.
I'd thought about making him turn a little senile recently, but haven't really RPed him enough to see this through. If you take him on you'll be inheriting a character who is greatly respected and looked up to still by two PCs (myself and Monterys Velaryon) but of waning power within the west and Westeros as a whole.
I'll let you know if I've left anything out of that. It's just off the top of my head.
Edit: Oh and I forgot. He has had one child with his new wife Annette - Godwin. He is a fat child currently serving as squire to Lord Danton Massey, Lord Paramount of the Westerlands, in King's Landing. The Worm still likes to have his fingers in the important pies.
Edit 2: And in terms of current events, the upcoming assault on Dragonstone will be very much on his mind. His grandson is hoping to reclaim his seat.
