Gariss shows Cregan into his solar.
"We have already begun a set amount of preparations. Once they are finished, the army will slowly absolve.
I have but one request, Cregan. For the good of the North you must do this."

"Tell me, Gariss. I will do anything that might aid the North in the times ahead."

"Forsake me. You, Zach, Umber and your uncle all must forsake me and call me a heathen. I have written a letter, that will be sent upon my death.
When the army leaves, I will stay. Alone. I will make a last stand here in mine own trial, for myself and for the Old Gods."

"What do you plan to do? I will not forsake you like that, Gariss. If you are to make a stand, I will stand next to you"

"No," Gariss said loudly and firmly. "You will not. This is the only path for the North. If I must die to save thousands, I would gladly give that sacrifice. I have given Zach my Death Letter, which will further resolve the blame. The Riverlands will be urged to follow Lord Tristifer, as he now moves to rally the Riverlands.
The orders have been given and you will follow them, Lord Cerwyn. I have given word to my wife to name the Sworn Shield of my children to Big Ben Umber and the Lord Protector of them officially as you, though Zach will very much be as big a part in their raising as the rest of Winterfell.
That is your duty, Cregan. See that the North survives and my children grow strong. My name may be soiled in history and in minds, though you must ensure the North lives on."

Cregan shook his head.
"And do you think that Rodrick and the other southern Lords will just abide by what you have written in your letter. No, he'll send your kids away to be fostered by someone loyal to him, so that they will be loyal to him when one of them is old enough to become Lord."
He placed a hand on Gariss' shoulder.
"Flee, my lord. And take your children with you, so that the line of the Starks will live on as the proud line that it is."

"In exile? I think not. You will listen to me. You and all the rest of the Lord must forsake me. Renounce me as King, and tell how I forced you all into my own submission. Tell how I lead a tyrant reign, merciless and evil, slaughtering those who fought against me.
Tell how you attempted a revolt against me when Rodrick was killed, though the fear of the hostages I held kept you from turning against me. Spit on my name, and curse my existence. Leave me here to face my own trial.
It is what is best, and it is what the North requires. It is our best option, and it is what must be done. You will follow me in my last request, Lord Cerwyn, else I believe you to not be as loyal as I once thought."
He spoke with a voice that harbored no objection. The North would have to be safe; and if it meant his life, he would gladly pay.

"I will not lie, not even for you, Gariss. You might have erred and listened to your foster-father too much, but I will not say things that are not true. That is the southerner's way, not us of the North. I will bow to Rodrick, but I will not say that you are a merciless tyrant."
He shook his head.
"You may think this is disloyalty that I speak against your foolish way. I have lived a lot longer than you, Gariss. And I am saying that letting yourself get killed is not the way. There are other ways we can do this. You might be executed for your treachery, but at least then you could walk proudly to the headman's axe."

"I will not ask you to lie, then. Only hold your silence. It will not end at my head, should you all still follow me. I have spoken with Rodrick, and he wants blood. Too much so. Already our army leaves, and so must you. I ensure you, it is for the best.
I will not endanger the north for my pride, or my name. I will meet my headsman here, when Smallwood arrives. It is the only way, and if I must have you tied up and carried away from here, it is what I will do, Lord Cregan," Gariss said, not cruely or harshly.

"If you are to meet your headsman here, I will be here to see it with my own eyes. No northern Lord should have to die, without a countryman standing there with him "

"I believe it is clear by the preparations. Spikes constructed on the walls, cauldrons of oil placed on the walkways, waggons and crates littering the yard in mounds. I plan to take as many with me as possible, while at the same time, saving both the North and the Riverlands. If any are to stay by my side, Rodrick would not stop in punishing whichever kingdom, house, man or child who stands by me. He wants blood, but only rebellious blood. This is out best chance to sedate that lust."

"But how would you do that, they might just seige this place and wait for you to starve to death"
