I'm a bit inept at these sorts of things, though, so could someone explain to me how to get one?

Usually people find them on random sites or google for them. Just find a pic you like and shrink it down to size.

Its the easiest way

Yeah, I just did a google image search for spear. I did open it in photoshop to make the greenish image red to match my character, but that's it. I resized it to standard avatar size (no bigger than 100x100 pixels) and uploaded it to photobucket, a free image hosting service. You can then import your avatar in your personal information settings.
