8) Character Personal History:
Monterys Velaryon comes from one of the oldest pure blood Valyrian blood lines in Westeros, with the first of the Velaryons arriving with Aegon the Conqueror, the first of House Targaryen. The Velaryons have several strong ties with the exiled Targaryen royal family as well as the current ruling house of Baratheon. The Velaryons had also provided brides for the Royal House of Targaryen on at least five occasions; the most recent when Monterys’ grandfather’s aunt Elyssandra married King Rodrick Baratheon.
The Velaryons have wavered between supporting the competing claims of House Targaryen and House Baratheon. They themselves descend directly from the Blackfyre bastards of King Aegon III Targaryen. At times they have privately questioned why their claim to the throne should be inferior to that of the modern Baratheons who trace their descent from a bastard son of King Robert I. At other times they have been drawn close to the royal House of Baratheon by virtue of a marriage. Monterys’ grandfather Jaehaerys was a close confidant and adviser to his cousin King Callen I. Yet Montery’s own father Rhaegar, himself the son of a Targaryen princess and married to the daughter of another Targaryen princess raised the banners of the Targaryens against the Crown in protest over the betrayal and death of his liege lord. As a result, the Velaryons lost their ancestral lands and had been split in two – some were in exile believed to be in the Free Cities or even beyond, while others had been taken west by their Lannister relatives and raised there.
Monterys and his younger brother Lyonel were raised by their grandfather Steffen Lannister and their mother Alessa at Ashemark. It was an unusual situation given that Monterys’ grandfather Steffen had married the much younger Annette Marbrand, elder sister of the young lord of Ashemark, Dudley Marbrand. Monterys, although four years younger than his new grandfather’s good-brother grew very friendly with young Dudley. Despite the four year age difference, it seemed that given Monterys’ skill at weapons that the two were of an age.
And so the years passed with Monterys Velaryon gradually becoming what was expected of him, with help and constant advice from his wily grandfather. At age 13 Monterys squired for his cousin’s husband Dickon Brax, earning his knighthood at age 15 in 539. Despite the urging of his grandfather to marry, Monterys resisted his various suggestions of local brides. His younger brother Lyonel was not so selective having recently become betrothed to the pretty daughter and heiress of Lord Kennos Kenning of Kayce. Lyonel had served as a squire to Cedric Lannister himself and the betrothal met with his approval as well as Steffen’s.
Now in his early twenties, Monterys finds himself gaining a fair amount of independence and self-confidence as Steffen Lannister grows older and seemingly less imposing. Courtesy of his training with his cousin’s husband, the noted general Dickon Brax, Monterys has developed into a man of significant knightly skill.
