Reaching out Anya cupped a cheek of her daughter-in-law, "You are as wild as me in some ways, aren't you. Too good for Rodrick by half. Its a shame you did not marry my Rickon." Her smile intensified, she chuckled to herself, "I think he would like you better then that cold maid forced upon him."

That kind of talk made Selyse uneasy, but her face did not show it. She gazed at Anya with grave grey eyes. "Is it true, then, that Rickon does not care for Jeyne?" she asked quietly. Jeyne certainly seems to think so, she thought, but she would not repeat that here.

Anya shrugged, "Rickon has always been very much his own person. Nearly any woman would be hard pressed to earn his affections. I do not know if that one is enough Lioness to warm his heart." She frowned a little, "Rickon used to speak so well of her, but I do not think she has measured up to his imaginings."

Rickon is stingy with his affection? Oh yes, I'll believe that. Selyse had her own opinion of the King's abilities as a husband, and it was not very high. Of course, Rickon's mother was quite eager to place all the blame on Jeyne. "That is a pity, my lady," Selyse said cautiously. "They both seemed so well suited for each other. What happened?"

"They actually got to know one another." Anya smiled a little in memory, "When I first wed Callen, there was no man more enticing to me. A couple of years later, there was no man I despised more." She chuckled, "I know he went through a similar transformation. It is the one freedom I envy of the Smallfolk. To wed the one you love." She shook her head as she finished.

"Did you love King Callen then, my lady, when you first wed him?" Selyse asked, both curious and eager to steer away from the subject of Rickon and Jeyne.

"I was definitely in love with the idea of him." She smiled much like a wolf, "And I loved being Queen."

"They say he was very handsome," Selyse said. "With silver in his black hair, and tall and muscled like a maiden's fantasy, and so silver-tongued that women swooned at his speech."

"I have many handsome men." Anya replied, ""His tongue was not so much silver, more bronze. A dull bronze."

Selyse laughed, and hastily coughed. "We Royces think quite well of bronze, my lady."

"Sure, but that is some magical bronze." Anya agreed, "But there was nothing magical about Callen."
