7) Brother to Ser Zachary Lannister, Ser Steffen is the older son of Randwin Lannister and a second-cousin to Lady Jeyne Lannister. Unlike most boys his age, Steffen did not dream of battle. He dreamt of a throne, and power since the tender age of 11. Although commonly displaying talent at both swordplay and horse riding, Steffen frustrated his father, who was to depart westeros soon after, by showing more interest in maps, listening to tales of kings and dragons and chasing local peasant girls.
As a result, Steffen found himself negelected, and grew closer to his champion Spear, and other lowborn friends. It was among these that Steffen found his love of trickery and falseness. The more he listened to mercenary tales of riches, often coupled with betrayal, the more Steffen questioned the ideas of honour and loyalty he had been weaned on. After his father departed Westoros, Steffen immediately began to ply his trade in Lannisport, bribing petty lords, 'taxing' the locals, and building himself a powerbase in the area.
Steffen gained extensive contacts throughout Lannisport, slowly building his wealth. He was reported to have gained his knighthood by bribing ser Arthur Marbrand at the age of 17, although like many things concerning the Worm, it was never proved. It was during this time that he began to being referred to as 'the Worm' as opposed to 'the Lion', due to his apparent desire for talking, or 'avoidance of battle', and his particularly oily charm used when talking to superiors. To the horror of family members, Steffen took the title on, adding a sigil of a worm next to the golden lion of lannister.
At the battle of the Golden tooth he was responsible for ambushing the rear of the enemy, although it is rumoured that Steffen himself stayed out of the battle, having a loyal sword arm wear his arms while he 'entertained' the daughter of a local petty lord. At the age of 22, he was expelled by Lord Baldwin, only for him to ply his trade of treachory in the Reach. Although it has never been proved, Steffen was rumoured to lead a group of mercenaries there, ambushing trade wagons and even attacking the odd village. After 2 long years of absence, he returned to Lannisport assuming a position of power in the city, much to the dismay of local residents, and to his younger brother ser Zachary.
Following this return, Steffen continued to get himself involved in various underhand dirty schemes, including assuming control over Riverrun through weaselly means and managing to seal a marriage with the Targaryen Princess Daena, beating many other potential suitors to her hand, the couple having two children, Alessa and Zachary. He also secured himself a place on the Targaryens' Small Council as Master of Coin for a few years. This period can be seen as his highpoint, as things went downhill on King Callen's return. Callen's Ironborn allies captured and razed Riverrun, his seat. Naturally, with the Lannisters being the final family to remain in support of the Targaryens, he lost his place on the Small Council shortly afterwards.
Steffen's final major act before entering into a period as something of a total recluse, was brokering a 'secret deal' with Rhodri Arryn, allowing him to walk away unharmed from the Golden Tooth, a castle he had occupied in the Lannister's name when the army of Callen came calling during Allard's rebellion.
Little is known of what he has done in the decade-or-so since then. Early in this period, it is known that his wife, Daena Targaryen, and their son Zachary were murdered. It is not known who committed this crime however, and Steffen has remained very tight-lipped on the subject. He has remained very much out of the public eye, leading some to begin speculation over his death. He is however, very much alive, and recently negoiated a marriage between his only daughter Alessa and Lord Rhaegar Velaryon, attending the wedding at Driftmark himself.
8) At just above average height, and of slim build, Steffen bears a bald head, blue eyes, thick eyebrows and high cheekbones. Steffen is famed for dressing less than spectacularly, preffering simpler clothes than most members of the lannister house. Clean-shaven, Steffen bears a childhood scar on his leg from falling on a sword.
9) Ser Steffen has an incredibly poor reputation. This was first gained at a young age when he beat a whore to death in public, in an argument over payment. He has not changed much since. He is known as being cruel and cowardly, ever hungry for power - using whatever cunning tactics are needed to take it.
He is heavily mistrusted by the Baratheon establishment, having been a staunch supporter of the Targaryen Kings for many years, and indeed, having been married to a Targaryen Princess.
