7) Character Personal History: Gerold Hightower was born in Oldtown. He lived there for seven years and then he was sent to Braavos for training. He learned how to lead ships into battle and he also learned the art of Braavosi swordfight, the Water Dance. When he was eighteen he started to travel all the way through the Narrow Sea. He returned to Oldtown a year ago.

7) Character Personal History: Petyr was born as the son of a lower branch of house Tarly and he was always bookish. His father didn't want him in his household so he sent him to the Citadel at the age of 8. Soon enough he forged the link of Valyrian Steel and at the age of 16 he became a maester. Since then he learned a lot about magic. He traveled the Free Cities and he even went to Qarth, so that he could pick up enough material to write his book.

I think the point is, once he becomes a maester he's not supposed to use it, because he cannot have a bond to any House that's stronger than his bond to the citadel. He's just Maester Peytr I think
