At the sound of a scream, a Bravo opened the door, to see what was the matter.
"Seeing liquid, and hearing the lady scream, the bravo gulped. He'd fought many a duel, but this was beyond his realm of expertise.
"I'll... go and fetch someone." he said, closing the door again, and locking it behind him.
A short while later, a doctor, and three mid-wives appeared, along with the curious bravo.
"How long again since the contractions started?" The doctor asked Aranya, snapping his fingers in front of her face to get her to concentrate.

"Fifteen minutes, I think," she gasped.

The Doctor looked at the Bravo with eyes like throwing knives.
"You should have fetched me sooner you brainless dolt. When did you conceive?" He asked the foreign woman, clicking his tongue sharply.
The midwives were boiling water and placing instruments on the bed side, and began washing Aranya's. One placed a warm wet towel across her eyes.

"Nine months ago, I think," Aranya gritted her teeth.

" "mayhaps nine months, but it may have been less. Regardless, this child means to come right now." He examined the woman carefully.
"This is not your first child." he said, "You know what to do. Breathe deeply, and push when I tell you."

Aranya was calm despite her pain, especially as a doctor was here, and nodded, sweating. Her contractions had gotten progressively longer, stronger and closer together. The pain was intense, and her curses were loud and eloquent. Then they spaced out again, and Aranya eased a little in relief, and finally the contractions stopped. She felt a pressure inside her, and recognized the urge to push.

As she pushed, the doctor watched, offering advice, and encouragement. The three midwives did the same, keeping Aranya's forehead watered.
"Stop!" The doctor said, "Stop pushing. The cord is around the baby's neck." He knelt down, and began to work to untangle the child.
"You must stop pushing!" He urged.

"Holy shit," Aranya gasped. She stopped, terrified, sweating, and racked with pain. She had been holding her breath; she found it made pushing easier.
"Don't let my baby die," she snarled weakly. "Or you won't outlive him much longer."

"Save your strength, and stop fucking pushing, or you'll be carrying that threat out upon yourself." The doctor grunted, as slick fingers worked delicately around the child's neck. Finally, the man wiped his forehead with a bloody hand.
"Okay, Push now for sake of the gods. Push hard."

Aranya struggled for breath and pushed, screaming, but her efforts were weaker now. It was more painful than constipation, but try as she could, she was weakening. Aranya grunted and groaned and exerted her muscles, not giving herself room to stop for fear that she would weaken further.

Just when Aranya thought she could push no more, there was the sounds of crying.
"it's a boy." The doctor said, after awhile. "A healthy baby boy." The doctor showed the baby to Aranya, but it was hard to make anything out beneath the haze of her tiredness, and the blood and mucus.

Despite her pain and exhaustion, Aranya gave a tired smile. "Let me hold him," she said, reaching out.

The midwife shook her head. "One moment, while we wash him." The midwife disappeared, as the doctor did some final inspection to insure that Aranya was healthy as well as the baby.
"You're right as rain." he said, after awhile.
The midwife returned with the child, wrapped up in swaddling cloth. She handed the child to it's mother.

Aranya's sweaty, tired face lit up when the midwife placed the baby in her arms. He was tiny, with a red, wrinkled little monkey face, but he already had a soft feathering of dark hair on his head. She kissed him and shushed his crying. She was glowing, but there was a bittersweet smile on her face.
"My son," she whispered, kissing his head again and giving him her breast to feed. "Your name shall be Wulf."
Wulf did not seem to care, and sucked hungrily, blindly. Aranya gazed at him for a long while, a torrent of conflicting emotions in her heart, but when she looked up at the doctor, she smiled. "Thank you."

The doctor shrugged. "It's my duty." He said simply. He shooshed the midwives away.
"Madam, You should know, there was a great deal of tearing, and blood loss. You should remain in bed for as long as possible. Any excess activity, could prove a complication."
