A sneak peak at the scenario I just submitted:
Ser Rhodri Royce, the Redspear, and Ser Selwyn Stone packed up their belongings onto their mounts and departed the Splendid Eagle. No longer would they need to stay in a common inn in King's Landing. They sang an idle song on their winding way through the city. At the gates of the Red Keep they met up with their kinfolk -- Ser Breyn Royce, the One-Eye, and Lady Lilith Royce.
Ser Breyn was Rhodri's elder brother, a stout and dangerous man, deadly with the axe. He was heir to the Vale and all the power that implied; between them, he took the greatest concern in the politics and dealmaking of the realm. Lady Lilith Royce was a tall, handsome woman; called the "Merry Widow".
~~~~~
The companions Royce arrived at the Tower of the Hand for an appointed dinner with the Lord Hand, Michael Dondarrion, and his family. When the night ended, Rhodri and Selwyn would be staying; they had new quarters in the Tower of the Hand, for the Redspear had been appointed the new Captain of the Hand's Guard. Their horses were taken by the ostlers at the stable, and their gear removed to their new rooms.
The feast was luxurious, as to be expected when dining in the Hand's own solar. Rhodri had arrived with his sights set on another goal: the Hand's three sisters were all in attendance, in town to celebrate the betrothal of their brother. He was to choose between them.
The Princess Margaret, Lord Dondarrion's new bride, was certainly noted for her stunning Valyrian looks, violet eyes and shining hair. However, at this dining table, you'd think she had three sisters present. The three daughters of the Late Lord Memoran Dondarrion, Becca, Ava, and Illiaena, were born from the Lady Daella Targaryen, and all three shared the distinctive look of the long lost dynasty.
Between them, Ava could be described as the most striking beauty. Soft features, a forgiving face, a gentle demeanor. Rhodri had never seen a woman so perfect, she seemed a painting come to life. Illiaena was closest in age to Rhodri, and pretty as well, but she giggled and acted a child. Becca was the eldest; tall, fair of features but of sterner disposition. She would laugh and joke, but her comments were often cutting. She wore a long-handled dagger at her waist.
After the meal, Lord Dondarrion called forth a band of musicians and set the party to dance. As Rhodri stepped through each partner, he saw the beauty of the sisters up close. Not surprisingly, it was Ava who moved the most gracefully. Rhodri had trouble preventing the impure thoughts when he danced with her. Illiaena laughed and flirted, but Rhodri could not tell when she was serious and when she was not. Becca's grip was strong; as they danced, she stepped with the firm, deliberate feet of a warrior. Her steely look seemed to be appraising him.
It was when he took a turn with his Naunt Lilith he asked for her counsel.
"Do you see storms on the horizon? Marry the one made of steel. You do not need a soft creature you must always guard."
After the dance was done, the celebrants gathered again at the fireplace. Rhodri took his chance to pull the Lord Hand aside and asked a fateful question:
"I am ready to propose a wedding between my House and yours. I seek union between the Lady Becca Dondarrion and myself."
Michael nodded in agreement, with a sly smile. He suggested Rhodri test Becca's enthusiasm. She was unwed at twenty-three because she had refused two suitors already.
Rhodri turned to address his potential bride.
"Mi'lady. I take to the lists tomorrow, to joust in your brothers name. I ask for but one thing: your favor to carry with me and to give me strength".
Becca responded with a cool smile and silence. Rhodri's stomach started to twist. Then, with a flourish, she drew three silk scarves from her dress; one red, one lavender, and one black.
"Wear these on your helm tomorrow, and think of me."
Turning to Michael, she said "Brother, I think you've finally caught a fish I'm willing to keep. At least he's taller than me for once".
Result: Ser Rhodri Royce moves into his new quarters in the Tower of the Hand, and Rhodri and Becca Dondarrion are betrothed.
Congratulations brother. First Captain of the Hand's Guard, now winner of the tourney. Your star rises ever faster.
In another matter, Lord Baldwin Lannister has requested an alliance with House Royce in exchange of aiding me in my quest for a position on the Small Council. Though the Lannisters have not always been trustworthy, I worry of the growing alliance between Rose and Wolf. Your thoughts kinsmen?
I think we need allies. If we can bond with the Lannisters, get you on the small council, and derail the Tyrell-Baratheon wedding, we'll be well set.
I'm thinking of writing a scenario in which my second looks into the whereabouts of Sara Royce. Sara, you object to being found?
I still worry about the poisoning tendencies of Lannisters..... Could we start ties with the Braavosi as an alternate path to power? Might Becca have relations across the seas that we could cultivate?
Mayhaps we find a way to kill Steffen without our name involved... Hmmm....killing a PC might be difficult, interesting thought though. Auntie Lilith does have poisons, but I'm only an apprentice poisoner and this would involve "a skill check" so might not happen.
Not at all. Feel free to find me if you wish. Bonding with the Lannisters could be useful... I see the children have come to King's Landing to rub shoulders with the Baratheons, I could try to befriend the older girl, shes only 14 but it might work, if not... nothing ventured nothing gained I suppose.
The alliance between Stark and Tyrell is all but sealed. The danger in only allying with NPC powers (Dondarrion, Braavos, etc) is that it is the players who push their own agenda via scenarios -- NPC allies are only worth as much as the gamemaster wants to make them. Lord Baldwin Lannister will work hard to promote his own interests, and if our own intrerests mesh, we'll be the beneficiary. But I'd keep most of our work with him on the downlow.
I agree. I'll send a secret scenario to our benevolent moderator and ask him not to post it (if its allowed). Then send another scenario saying I somehow mysteriously was appointed Master of Law.
In another matter, I have joined the tournament. It should be fun. Stark and Tyrell will probably unite against Lannister so maybe I'll hang back until they have beaten each other bloody and then wound off the remaining combatants. I hope I don't die. That's a good attitude to have coming in isn't it.
Not dying is for the best. Otherwise, you'll be waiting for Rhodri and Becca to pop out kids, and for those kids to grow up, before you have a character again.
Hmmm...Baldwin would be a powerful ally though I prefer the idea of not having an open association, and Zach seems decent. Stephen is definitely a worm (as would his alter ego, the squire be) and you are right to avoid him, Rhod, even if it might be useful.
Septa Evangeline has just started a conversation with the High Septon, have no idea what they are saying to each other but I thought it would be good to have some in with him. I was thinking of supporting the army of the Temple of Baelor (what ever they were called) if necessary but since our Rhoddie is doing so well no need to upset the apple cart right now. Perhaps I should just let him know that my kinsmen are his supporters, and that we are true believers. A nice contribution at some point in the future would of course be welcome, but need to pay for the party first!
The Old Crone in the square has also hired a bright young thing from the Merry Maid, so business is growing there as well.
