The melee will be fought with the participants divided into two teams. After lunch, Master Galwyn sends his aide out to nail up the notice which lists the teams for the melee. The participants crowd around to see who their teammates will be.

The Smith approved a different storyline which will have definitely affected Brandon.

That's what I believe Felryn was referencing. Perhaps Smith has retconned that and approved a new storyline more recently.
