I feel I should add here - if Dougal rides his new horse in the joust, he should have a slight advantage since my Breeding skill is Beginner.

Does horsemanship skill factor into jousts at all?

A lot of jousters have their own horse whom they train with many times and get a feel for, as the horse gets accustomed to the rider and vice versa. A new horse right before the tourney could actually mess him up.

Dougal IS riding Sandstorm in the joust, but, for now I'd say everything evens out, as the advantage of a superior horse would offset the unfamiliarity. Maybe later down the line it may add an advantage, but not yet.
