Personal History: Olander Reed was born the second son, but first trueborn heir, of Lord Bennard Reed. The young crannogman spent the childhood of his life in a brotherly, and not always friendly, rivalry with his year older bastard -half-brother Dunnock Snow, whom it was obvious his father had a much greater fondness for. When the Lady Reed disdain proved too much, his father's bastard was sent away from the Neck at the age of fourteen, leaving Olander alone to prove himself.
His lord father proved to be a middling lord at best and a miserable one at worst, his interest lying more in his Riverlander mistress rather than in his people or his lands. From harboring southron 'sellswords' and taking in Night's Watch deserters, to leaving a blood feud between Houses Fenn and Moss unchecked, to failing to manage his own house and abandoning his gods for his mistress's faith in the Seven, Lord Bennard quickly became a man that Olander was eager to earn respect from to one that he despised.
Olander's talent for deception and fore-planning first came in an assignment from his liege lord Roose Stark to capture the murderer of Lord Manderly, the apostate Pylos Frey. Spreading the fingers of his network into the dark of White Harbor, young Olander arranged a meeting at the ruins of Moat Cailin between he and the Red Priest to supposedly plot the downfall of Roose Stark. Instead, Pylos found himself at the deadly end of an ambush, first incapacitated by poisoned food and brought to justice at the point of a dagger. As a reward for his work, Olander was granted permission to reconstruct the ruins of Moat Cailin and claim the new seat for House Reed, a project would take several years to accomplish.
During his time spent outside the Neck with Roose Stark, Olander's view of his liege lord began to change. What state was the North in, if not one similar to that in the Neck? Rebellion at the Stoney Shore, Skagosi invasion, murders in White Harbor. In the young crannogman's mind, the parallels between Roose and his own father were numerous, only given resolve by a dire greendream that spoke of Roose's downfall. Patiently, Olander began to put a plan in motion that would save the North from a fate unfitting for the home of the Old Gods.
During the Basilisk Invasion, Olander was charged with watching over the North alongside the legendary Skagosi commander. With the Ironborn occupied in the Riverlands, Olander saw the prime opportunity to seize Bear Island back into Northern control, and with the aid of ships sent by House Farman, the crannogman successfully led a midnight ambush on the island and reclaimed it from the ironborn.
The grand Sun Throne of Dorne, that had been previously captured and taken to Bear Island was now brought south into the Neck. After being greeted with an auspicious greendream in his slumber, Olander took axe and hammer to the magnificent golden throne and broke it apart, revealing a priceless treasure. The three lumps of ore had traveled a great distance, not just from the southern end of Westeros, no, but from the stars themselves. Olander had the starmetal ore to Pentos to be forged into a great trident, named Gods' Sight.
As the invasion wore on, a northern host was assembled at the partly constructed Moat Cailin, and led south by Olander in the guise of ironborn support. When his sizable force linked up with the former lord of Bear Island, Olander abandoned his false colors and captured the traitor king, Erik Greyjoy, and delivered him to King's Landing. During his time in the south, Lord Bennard Reed passed away, making Olander Lord of Moat Cailin and Greywater Watch. Secretly, it had been a poison that Olander had designed that weakened his body and eventually caused his death. The Neck was now his to set to rights, and to make prosperous and strong again.
After the Basilisk Invasion and Ironborn rebellion was put down, a feast for the Northern lords was held at Moat Cailin for the purpose of discussing the future of the North. In the midst of the feast, several northerners, including Lord Bolton, Lord Stark, and Lord Reed himself, amongst many others, took ill. Roose Stark was the most severely sicken of those who were not killed, yet in the morning he was found to have died. After a council of the stunned northern lords, Olander Reed was chosen to become the Lord Protector of the young Gariss Stark.
And thus, the culmination of Olander Reed's work had been realized. After poisoning his own feast, and smothering Lord Stark in the night, his opposition was elminated. With the weak leadership of Roose Stark eliminated, Lord Reed was free to raise young Gariss as a strong, noble Lord, and set to rights the state of the North.
Physical Description: Lord Reed is a slender, slight man, as the Crannogmen are so wont to be. His hair is the color of dried mud flecked with grey snow, trimmed short and immaculately combed to lay neatly, the same mud-and-snow hair in a goatee framing his solemn slash of a mouth. The Lord Reed's face is sharp and somber, with deep-set, tepid moss green eyes that are unlikely to betray either intent or emotion. Olander favors dark, simple clothing of wool, leather and linen in blacks, browns, greys, and greens. Lord Reed's personal arms bear the image of a white heart tree carved with a grim red face, set on a black bend-sinister on a field of green-grey.
Reputation: Olander Reed is known as an aloof, clever man who carries the Old Gods and legends of the North close to his heart. He has a good rapport with the majority of the Northern lords, having successfully carried the North through the tough the strife of the murder of Roose Stark and the post-war recovery during his regency. Most believe that the young Lord Gariss was raised in good hands by an accomplished man loyal to to the North and his Gods. Few know of his fervent interest in the tales of the Children of the Forest, and deep belief in the greensight.
