Gerold Kellington surveyed the roof tops of the landing as he waited for one of his whisperers to report back to home. He had just begun to set up a small network in the Red Keep and another, more difficultly in Braavos. Setting up a network in Braavos had been more difficult than he thought, as Braavosi were sympathetic to many Westerosi rebels and exiles. Even the Dornish scum had a home in Braavos.
Gerold had to think outside the box on this one, but ultimately found an original plan. He had hired cabinboys and minor attendants on merchant ships as informants, and as they traveled from Braavos to Westeros the informants would make their reports. The pay wasn't horrible either, especially for such a young kid.
Gerold laughed in his head. It was a perfect plan, he thought to himself as he reented his bedroom and poured himself a glass of wine. Braavos was hardly friendly territory and the rise in Dornish immigrants was sure to make it increasingly hostile. His plan didn't have much of a risk though, because the traders going back and forth between the two lands were neither friend nor foe and everyone needs money. Especially the poor orphans of the world, Gerold thought as he reclined in a chair sipping wine.
He had pulled open a book that concealed a small map. He tracked where his networks were mentally, and as he did he remembered how exactly he had found an in in the Red Keep. It hadn't come easy, and perhaps if he was more skilled he would have been able to put a more stable network in the Red Keep, but it was no use now. Gerold had spent many busy weeks preparing a steady purchase of moon tea which he had used to offer to handmaidens who were stuck in their own political dramas. Gerold offered them coin and tea to hide their scandals and save their heads from the chopping blocks. Everyone had their secrets, he just needed to keep taking advantage of that fact.
With the last coins of his budget and further investment from the young Lord Dondarrion, Gerold had established a (needless to say) small network in Blackhold. The job was much more simple than the last ones. The house guard at Blackhold were already the most loyal of Lord Dondarrion's men, and perhaps the most elite, but the house itself could never be exempt from spies serving as servants. Gerold had run over the list of the most senior servants in Blackhold and had addressed them personally concerning a significant heighten in their wages should they comply with a basic task. All had accepted up to this point, because jobs like this were hard to come by in King’s Landing.
Gerold then offered each of these individuals (and there were four) the monthly raise if they should help keep a watch on the house. Gerold made the duty sound similar to their present one, as not to raise curiosity from their employees. He gave them specific tasks and areas to watch, as well as the group task of monitoring new employees.
A good defense was the best offense, Lord Kellington thought as he sipped once more from his wine goblet. He relaxed, fixing his mind on the pleasant thought of his young children at home. No matter how long he was away from them, he was serving to protect them. To protect the Stormlands too…and the Crown should it ask him. Kellington smiled finally, as he now completely realized his new standing.
