Waking from the comforts of his new bed in Blackhold, Gerold Kellington was quick to find himself some breakfast- a few slices of bread, cheese and ale despite the early hour. After dressing in worn dark riding clothes (instead of his house's colors) he made his way from the house to the attached stable, where he mounted a strong horse, and headed straight into the heart of the city.
In this instance the "heart" of the city was Flea Bottom, a place which he previously had no interest in visiting and only allowed himself to venture towards the slums in pursuit of his prized objective. He pressed his horse in through the horrid smells of the streets, and tried to avoid the crap on the sides of the roads. The smallfolk of King's Landing can be truly unmannered at times, Gerold thought as he dodged a half dozen beggars. He watched a pickpocket steal from an unaware merchant as the man stood watching a street entertainer.
It was a colorful scene Gerold decided, despite the fact that the colors were all kind of boring to him. It wasn't until a few streets later that he found what he had been interested in the whole time: at the basement of a sept was a haven for agents of all kinds. It was Gerold's mission to select and establish a solid network of whisperers in the city. His goal was modest, but it was something nice to start with.
Gerold left his horse with a young trusthworthy boy and gave him a coin as he went inside the sept, and after hailing the Septon he made his towards the basement door. The Septon began to protest but Gerold turned back and said, "Please Septon, this is a matter of great importance. There are men here that I must speak with, for the sake of the Seven."
He must have spoken the right words, or perhaps the Septon was largely indifferent, as he Gerold was undisturbed when he descended the flight of stairs that led into the basement.
"Who are ya?", came a call from the shadows, a young boy.
"I'm your future employer. I've been sent by the Seven to bring you to prominence. Prominence that will be gained in my servitude." He paused, but only long enough to let the dramatic statement sink in.
"How many times have you eaten today?", Gerold asked as he turned to another man who Kellington spotted through the darkness. Gerold walked into the shadows, carefully letting them encompass him too.
"Once", the answer came, in an unfortunately young voice.
"I'll promise you more food and baths than you've had in your life. All I ask of you is loyal service...I need ears. I want you lot to be the whispers in my ear, the little angels who help guide the kingdom from the bottom up. It all starts from the bottom you know. You tell me what is happening, I tell my masters and then the changes happen. This is prominence, this is our providence."
After a few moments of deliberation, the young boys agreed. After a few hours of details, and a few more days of meeting and recruiting, Gerold had his first network formalized.
