"2,500 right now, Doggets, Peckledowns, Spicers and Turnberrys, among others. With more coming. I don't know how we'll get word to them to turn towards Deep Den instead, but we'll get as many as we can find along the roads and cow trails.'

They walked out to the stables. "Are Ser Steffen and Ser Walter coming?" Cerenna asked.

"If they can keep up." Lefford said, not particularly impressed with Ser Steffen Lannister. "He had mentioned traveling to Riverrun I think. Which is his prerogative."

"My lady won't be surprised to hear that," Cerenna said as they mounted up. "But she will be pleased that you are coming - she and Ser Cedric won't care about anything else. You are a man of great fame on the battlefield."

"Mostly undeserved, I assure you." Lefford said, but he beamed all the same. "Would you not consider traveling to Riverrun with Ser Steffen? You have discharged your duty well, there would be no shame in it."

"No," Cerenna said scornfully. "I'm not a worm. I can take care of myself in a fight."

Lefford shook his head disappointed, "I felt obligated to offer it." He said, as he clicked his tongue, and the horse rode to the front of the line of troops.
"Men, we ride for Deep Den. We must arrive there before the enemy, if they are to have any hope of standing. If Deep Den Falls, King's Landing will be next. But we men of the West will not allow it. So we ride!"
The troops began their march.

As main force began to march south from the Golden Tooth, Ser Steffen and his small entourage set off in the opposite direction - for Riverrun. Ser Walter had handed over control of the small force he had brought from Sarsfield to a Spicer knight. To his relief, nobody really seemed to question his escorting Steffen north, all assuming it was an order from higher up. It didn't stop him feeling a little ashamed however, looking at the frightened faces of young men marching almost certainly to their deaths.
Steffen of course took it all in his stride, looking at these men as if they were fools. A wise man would always take his course of action. Besides, he'd already lost more than most of these men, why risking losing even more?
