Walder Frey vs. Torrhen Keath & men

[Horas]

The Room

A tower cell. A high barred window, only one exit, which the Blackwood men are standing in front of. Torrhen has his weapon drawn before the first blow is swung. Walder and his bodyguard are seated.

Walder Frey, no physical skills
His Eastern bodyguard, unarmed

Blackwood
Torrhen Keath, master axeman
1 Cell Guard Leader, expert swordsman
3 Cell Guards, noteworthy swordsmen -- among the most loyal Riverlander guards (meant to stop Francis from bribing them)
4 Torrhen's men, unspecified weapon skills -- men who arrived with and are loyal to Torrhen Keath.

Varner
Francis Varner, many skills but unarmed. Probably not taking part in this unless he chooses to.

Circumstances

Copy and pasted the posts prior to this because of some things that may need to be rolled on.

Torrhen narrows his eyes. "Overstepping your bounds a lot lately, haven't you, Frey? As it happens, there are new orders from our good doomed King Crow." Torrhen hefts his axe in his hand. "Any last words?"

"Yes." He looked at the other men. "I will pay fifty thousand dragons to everyman here who will defend me."

Without hesitation, Torrhen Keath swings his axe at Walder Frey's head.

The large Easterner jumps forward to knock the axe out of the executioner's hand while the the little Lord runs to the other end of the room. "Twenty thousand dragons to save me! Thirty! Fifty thousand dragons!"

Torrhen gives a single laugh. "Lies. Blackwood has your gold now, Frey."


The way I see it, there should be a roll to see if Torrhen can kill Walder before his man can knock the axe out of the way/he can run. Then it should be rolled to see if any men will side with Frey. Then the battle.

Ugh, having four Master swordsmen on guard duty is just ridiculous, I need to bring this up in the council room.

I thought Master is the level of formidable warrior.... Randal`s most elite men were Expert skill and I think this is the absolute limit for non-named guys.

Well I believe that apprentice or noteworthy is the average for a regular knight, so expert would be for a very well trained guard. I imagine it'd be mighty hard to get many master guards.

Frankly I think even Expert is too high without making the well established skilled NPCs near useless.

Expert should be for a very well trained knight, which would obviously always be superior to a mere guardsmen.

Of every group of guardsmen, some will obviously be more skilled than most, and some less skilled. Although even if Horas picked his four best guards to be guarding this cell, I think their skills couldn't be higher than Expert or Noteworthy.

Of course every guardsman has different skills, but we just can't account for unnamed guards' individuality. That would be way too time-consuming and irrelevant.

I realize that, but I was just trying to make the point that since Horas claimes that his guards are Master Swordsmen which is too high for a guardsman, it's not unfair to take him to mean that he has the four most skilled guardsmen there, of his garrison, and so their skills might be slightly higher than the average guard.

The master swordsmen were not specified by me. They were specified by Smith in a previous thread on this page. To be honest I do not think I will need them vs. unarmed people. I am just going off of what the Smith has said earlier.

Smith has indicated that he intended that master swordsmen to be a descriptive term, and not a specific designation. I think it should be easily resolvable.

say 1 Expert, 3 Noteworthy, and 4 Apprentice?

The Bodyguard attempts to block Torrhen's axe

Fail-He hits the axe with his hand but is unable to block the blow of Keath. Lord Walder Frey dies deep in the bowels of the Red Keep.

The Bodyguard dies shortly later, after breaking the arm of one of Horsa' guards.
