A servant shows Garlan Rowan an appropriate series of apartments, and a serving girl sets to preparing a bath.
"Lord Varner will be in the great hall," she says. "You may join him whenever you are ready."

Garlan after bathing for a very long period of time walks into the Great Hall wearing a doublet with the Hightower on the breast. He bows to the floor for Francis, "You do not know me Lord Francis but I know your mother and you yourself."

"Thank you Garlan Rowan. My regards to Lord Robert Hightower. Do you bring a message from Old Town?"

Francis pretends to be surprised, although he is not, for his mother had written ahead.
"May I inquire into your parentage Ser Rowan? It is Ser yes?"

"No Lord Francis I never took the vows I worked as a steward for Robert Grandfather then his father and finally for him. I have lived in Oldtown for 40 years. I was brother to Lord Otto Rowan he died ten years ago. So I am of nobility."

"Ah.. yes. Well that counts for something. We Varners have gone up and down in fortune, so there's no shame in it, and a steward is a worthy profession. But is it a successful one? I must know that my mother will be carried for all the rest of her days."

"I have more then you Lord Varner you may have rich lands and people pay you taxes but the trade that moves through Oldtown and myself in command for the 5 years that Robert squired I made ventures that made myself rich but I was always loyal for every Gold I made two went to Oldtown if you wished to know."

Francis smiles at the befuddled man. "Forgive me Steward Rowan, if you felt I was denigrating you. But I am anxious for my mother to be well taken care of, as I am sure you understand. Is this the best match? The road to Old Town is long and rocky, and Old Town so large and impressive while Stoatheart is so small. If she marries you, she may never return and see her grandchildren grow up." Francis looked down at the steward. "You understand my concern."

"She can live where ever she wishes if she wishes to live her then I will live here it does not matter to me I only want her to be my wife." Garlan has a large smile on his face as he thinks of Ilisebeth.

Francis raised his eyebrows.
"That's not appropriate Garlan." Francis said simply. "If you want to marry Lady Varner, do it as a man. However, I think it very appropriate, if, in the name of your love for my mother, you paid for the construction of a road system between here and Old Town. Than you can travel back and forth to visit your grandchildren often. And instead of living here, perhaps you'd be willing to help in the expansion of Stoatheart. new wings for you and Lady Varner to use when you visit your grandchildren, with thicker, taller walls, so they will be safe. Would you accept this?"

"I will pay for the roads but Stoatheart is big enough for Grandchildren and two old loves." Garlan is still smiling refusing that anything will ruin this day.

"With war coming to the Reach Garlan, you'll tell me our walls are thick enough? I wish your confidence or your love would protect my family and my fields when the Vale men come and burn us out. Or if the Dornishmen cross the mountain passes. If you aren't interested in the security of my family, than you must not be interested in joining to my family."

"I am a trusted adviser and friend to Robert Hightower if you wish to be safe simply some to Oldtown with there you will be safe I can guarantee it. Lord Francis are you interested in marrying yourself."

Lord Varner shook his head.
"I'm not interested in the illusionary safety of Oldtown, good steward. I'm interested in securing MY people, here, at Stoatheart. Don't get me wrong, I am sure you are a good man, and will be a loyal husband to my mother, but from a step-father I require a little more. If you had a house, however small, with swords to give, I would take them. But you don't. You have wealthy businesses with trade from the Free Cities. I do not think my request unreasonable. Such construction will take a year, you still have many years of happiness before you, with Lady Ilisebeth at your side."
