Flea leads Roland into Francis' chambers. "Hello, Francis." Roland is older and surer of himself than the last time Francis had seen him. There was a certain darkenss detectable in his expression.

"Hello Ser Roland, it has been too long. I was told that your performance on the battle field was a true wonder to behold. It's a shame that whoreson Andry surrendered before you could cut him to ribbons." Francis looks tired, his face more expressive than usual, although the only emotion visible is a deep seated hate in his eyes.

Roland nodded tightly. "It was what it was, Francis... It took some resolve not to kill him, I will admit."

"I understand you resigned from the Bloody Gate. An unfortunate business, but some times we have problems we can settle only alone. I had a similar problem, when I had to get away for awhile you'll remember."

Roland's lip twitched. "Yes, I remember." He gave a wistful sigh, "It can be a long road. I would guess."

"While I was pretending to dead, I traveled to Braavos, in an attempt to strike back at our assailant, the Sealord. I succeeded in razing much of his Palace, but I missed the bastard himself. And now, I learn, that the price of peace is to bring me to trial, for the service I provided this Kingdom."

Roland grunted with almost a spit. "On what grounds can they try you, Francis?"

"Murder, Arson, attempted regicide, who the hell knows." The Sealord has demanded my head, and they apparently thought to appease him by offering a trial for this so-called crime. And for the good of Westeros I must hold my tongue, and not say the obvious truth, which is that I was acting in accordance with the wishes of my King and his appointed representatives." Francis gritted his teeth.
"Lord Horas is convinced that he can arrange for a verdict which vindicates me, but you know that a Man in my position does not make many friends, even here in our own Kingdom."

Roland worked his jaw. "Well, you can consider me one."

"I do Ser Roland. That means everything to me. I have put my trust in the Lord Hand, but if there is treachery, and things go against me, I do not intend to go quietly and..." he pauses, nervously, "I'd like to know if I would have your support... and your father's, and the Vale."

Roland nodded. "I'm not sure my father knows of what you've done for the ream. If he learned, he would not stand idly while they trade you for a peace we need not buy."

"Can you explain the situation to him and convince him? Or is he a man who can't be convinced of anything but his own opinion? Your his son, and I his son-in-law, I fear we won't be convincing enough."

Roland's eyes squinted as if looking at something far away. "You haven't met him have you? He will judge your character independently, none can vouch for it. I suggest that he'd be happy to meet his son-in-law, and then he can take your measure."

"Very well. Let us do that. A man should meet his Father-in-Law after all, especially if the chances are good that he may widow his daughter." Francis says with a grim smile.

Roland smiled. "Where is Anne?"
