"Now that is an interesting question, Lord Varner," Horas says. "I am curious how it is relevant."

"How you answer it is terribly terribly relevant Lord Horas. Of that I can assure you. So I would hear your answer before I know how much more I can proceed down this path with you."

Horas looks across the table at Francis, his face emotionless.
"I have dealt with the House of the Undying in the past. We had an unfortunate parting many years ago." Blackwood does not elaborate.

"A falling out so unfortunate that they would seek to frame you for murder and treason?" Francis queried.

"Perhaps," Horas says. "The Warlocks of Qarth possess very long memories. Though I still do not understand why you suspect them."

"Shortly after the attempt on the Lord Regent, my agents came into possession of correspondence from your agents in King's Landing, implicating them in the attack. However an investigation of the Red Keep revealed the death of a large handful of your wall crawlers, who were left out in the open clumsily. Both the senseless slaughter, and failure to conceal it seemed out of your style. So I became suspicious. Under interrogation, several of your agents revealed that they had received their orders from a cabal of 6 Warlocks. It seemed a highly unlikely story for multiple men to seize upon in an effort to escape torture, so I counted it as the most likely solution. The only question is whether they were warlocks in league with you, or against you. And so I came here to learn that answer."

Horas digests the information, then returns with a question of his own. "Have you heard of the Cult of the Dead God, Lord Varner?"

Francis shook his head. "I may have heard the words, but I know nothing of their nature."

"They are a group with both political and religious aims. What exactly they desire is difficult to ascertain, but they have been working against the interest of the realm since their formation several years ago. They had a hand in Wull's northern rebellion, and plotted to harm the Vale. They were also responsible for the assassination of Lady Becca Arryn, Lord Rhodri's late wife. And they have been known to work with warlocks."
Horas leans back. "I also suspect they have been killing my agents."

"And co-opting them? I suppose that widens the search some. Our interrogation subjects indicated these warlocks were working in cooperation with Westerosi nobles although no amount of coercion pried loose any names. So we are regretably still at square one, and with an odd story that I'm not sure the other members of the small council will countenance. Falgrave is with me, but Andry and Nehmen pushed hard for your dismissal already, it took the combined arguments of both Seth and I to hold them off. But my agents report no movement or conspiring from them, which seems odd given that they missed their target once, if one of them was involved, I'd have thought they'd contact their fellow plotters to arrange contingencies."

"I am going to return to King's Landing, Lord Varner. This situation with the Boltons must be dealt with, and I am the highest authority in the realm with Lord Bettley so grieviously wounded. I must govern from the Iron Throne."
"I have no desire to start a war in the capital itself. Any aid you could render in convincing the Small Council that I am innocent would be appreciated."

"The realm is yours to command Lord Hand. I shall do my best to persuade the small council of the reality of the situation, with the evidence we have at hand. Perhaps it is best. With you back in King's Landing it may flush out the real culprits. So it is to be war in the North then? I heard of the fighting at the tourney, I take it Bolton has escaped North and must be dealt with."

"Lyas Bolton has resisted arrest and fled north. There are several other Boltons in custody. It seems likely that Lord Lyas will soon call his banners."

"And the Crown will do likewise to put down this threat I presume? I have 8,000 men already armed, assembled and ready to depart as soon as I receive the word. I fear that our so far unidentified enemies will use this as a moment to strike us in the rear. Perhaps a repeat of the aborted Dornish coup from during the Reach's folly? Or something even more unsavory."
