"Perhaps," Aerie assented, collecting her reins. "This makes sense. Keath must have Kidwell captive. However, I don't recall anything about a wild dog or headless man. Why must these visions of your always present themselves in riddles?" Her voice and light and innocuous.

"The old gods," Aranya said, perfectly solemnly. "They don't communicate to you in words, so instead they use visions. And they cannot show you a man's face, only his heart, or what his mind thinks of himself as. That is why it appears to be a riddle, while in fact it's the deepest truth."
She whistled and the little golden hound came to heel. "We must ride back and tell the others. Perhaps they know something of the other three clues that we don't."

"The old Gods," Aerie echoed. Her faith.
Aerie shook away her thoughts and nodded, wheeling Anarchy deftly about. She waited for Aranya to summon her dog and put heels to her horse, cantering back the way they had come with visions of demons and headless men floating about in her head.

The girls rode back south, cantering swiftly through the forest, slowing down when the little hound needed to walk. They found the rest of the party in the late afternoon.
"Well, I know where Lord Kidwell is...in a sense," Aranya said as she and Aerie rode up. "He's wherever Kennos Keath is. And Kennos Keath is not in this forest."

Seth snickered. He thought it very likely that her hound had lost the trail and rather than admit it, she pretended they weren't there, but he kept it to himself. The name caught him off guard.
"Lord Kidwell? As in Kit?" Seth sighed, if anyone was not in need of rescuing, it was him. "Wonderful."

"They're not alone. It's not just Keath's bandits."
Aranya rode over to Rhodri. "I had a greendream. There is a blackcloaked man, a headless man and a wild dog. Aerie and I think the black cloak signifies a traitor of some kind."

Aerie heard Seth's discreet snicker and turned cool eyes to him. She found him very unamusing indeed. She dismounted and joined Aranya and Rhodri in their discussion.

"It's frustrating to have this knowledge when it's too late to pick up Kennos Keath's trail, or Kit Kidwell's," Aranya said. "If only the other three passed this way more recently - the trouble is, Skag won't know which trail to hunt."

"Kennos Keath is not one to hide for long. He revels in attention. Surely he is just looking to fight with the upper hand," Rhodri says.

"Then it is almost certain he has gone south. Think on it, Rhod. The Roseroad and the Kingsroad meet in this forest, and then part ways. If Kennos has indeed left this forest, then he may have gone by that road. And that also ties in with the vision of a black cloak - a traitor. A Reachman, guiding him down south on the Roseroad."

Aerie tapped her lips thoughtfully. "If Kennos knows we are here, the story may be different. I have the misfortune of knowing the man, and if there is one thing he is not too good at, it is running away from a fight. However, Aranya's vision indicates he has left the woods, so we may not need to worry about that."

"He can always turn back," Rhodri says. "The visions can be deceptive."

"Then we must be ready for him," Aranya said. She surveyed their company. "There's we three, all of us good with a sword. Lord Quinn and Roland are exceptional fighters, and Lord Falgrave can cover us with his arrows."

"I'm glad I am so esteemed to you, Lady Aranya." Seth said, joining the conversation. "Though I would ask how long Keath has been in these woods. It seems to me that he and his men would have the advantage of knowing the terrain, as they currently reside here. It might be best to try and lead them to an ambush."

"I know these woods as well as any bandit, Falgrave. I've hunted here before, and done other things as well. And I'd like to see them ambush us when my hound can smell anything from a great distance. He has never failed me on a hunt. And even if they can surprise Skag - which they can't - I have...eyes in the forest. Any number of eyes that I can call upon. So don't worry about us being ambushed."
