The headland surrounds Duskendale and much of the land bordering Blackwater Bay. It is rocky, of the same chalk and limestone as the cliffs that rise behind Duskendale. There are few or no trees - no plant could take root in that chalky soil.

Aranya rode Captain Snow at a brisk canter, enjoying the cold night breeze that whipped the stallion's mane back and her own hair. It felt clean, clearing out the troubled thoughts she'd been feeling, the mixed feelings she'd felt in her solar.

Ser Vance trots along on his beautiful red mare. He has a charger for the lists, but this steed is lighter and faster. "Beautiful country, Aranya, if one detests trees."

"Still, I think I like the scenery nonetheless."

"I like this land," Aranya said. "It's so cold and bare, salty and smells of the sea...there's a beauty to it. I've grown to like waking up to those chalk cliffs outside my window."
The black stallion snorts when he scents Ser Vance's palfrey.

"You can see great cliffs outside my father's holdfast. It is along a mountain ridge, and my family has burrowed diamond mines from the rock. The land does not grow crops so it is our only source of wealth," Ser Vance says. "Desolate land, like this, mostly bare rock and scrub. But beautiful. Your kinsman Roland is from a similar place. There are men of the mountains and men of the Vale. Roland and I are men of the mountains, despite my airs."

"It seems I have gotten serious for moment. Can't allow word of that to get out."

"I am a mountainwoman, in many ways. I grew up at the Bloody Gate, which is nestled in the Mountains of the Moon, and ranged all my life, with one tribe after another. But after some of my travels, and some of the...well, this past year...I find that this bleak, beautiful land suits me."
She smiled. "But no sad talk. Tell me - how have you enjoyed the tourney? Will you stay for the melee tomorrow, or are you leaving?"

"Whatever mi'lady wishes, I am in no true hurry. Lord Rhodri would have me in his Watch, but I spent the better part of the year in Lord Grafton's army and I don't mind being a Knight Errant. Seeing cities, entering tourneys. Duskendale has made a pleasant hunt."

Aranya pulled Snow to a halt by a rocky beach, the cold salt waves rushing in; the evening tide was quite low tonight, and it was easy to look out onto Blackwater Bay.
"It's fun to travel, isn't it?" Aranya said as she dismounted. "I could never be tied down in one place, even after my marriage." She kicked her boots off and walked down the beach, apparently enjoying the cold.

"That it is. I never really plan to stop. Just in the army, I saw Harrenhal, Raventree, the ruins of Riverrun, the Golden Tooth and Casterly Rock -- and every village between them. Now, as a free man, I intend to see even more. I want to see the high walls of Storm's End and sample Dornish sweets..."
"But there is beauty here, too."

Aranya sat down. There was sand, but more salt and rock. "Yes, I can see how beautiful you must find it," she said wryly, looking at the chalky dust that came off the rocks.

"Beautiful enough to keep me here this long." Vance sits down beside Aranya.

Aranya listened to the crashing waves, and just smiled.

Vance watches the waves with Aranya for a moment. "Compelling, isn't it? The rhythm of the waves, the constant crash. Seeps into your bones."
"I'm sorry about the chalk in your hair."
