"As soon as war ends, friend, tourneys start," Ser Vance says. "It seems men are afraid they'll forget how to strap on their armor without regular practice. I prefer to take mine off, and yet I can't resist a tourney. I know Lady Aranya intends to take the Champion into her service -- perhaps you should enter, if that is your goal."

Jonjen shrugged, "I don't much like tourneys. If she does not want me some one else will."

"Well, your choice, freerider. But you had a fair bit of skill on show in King's Landing."

Jonjon nods, and adds almost bitterly, "Just because you are good at something does not mean that you have to like it."

Jonjen looks around at the other knights crowded into the inn, "I should have known there was a tourny on. I am just looking for a house to serve for a couple months." One of the dogs was fawning over Ser Jonjen Hill. Aranya glanced at it. "I will gladly take you into my service, Ser Jonjen. Ser Vance speaks truly - you showed exceptional skill in King's Landing. But you need not enter the tourney here if you do not wish." Aranya glanced around. "It seems that all the knights have finished their food. Mount up, men. You will raise your pavilions on the tourney grounds. I shall ride for the Dun Fort with the men in my service." She winked at Vance.

Ser Vance smiles. "To the Dun Fort then, mi'lady?"

"Yes," Aranya said, straight-faced. She mounted Captain Snow and led the others up through the town to the castle that overlooked the port.

Early on the morning following the tournament, a battered Roland Royce mounts his new courser, Dusk. He rides out of Duskendale in company with Daven Hersey and their squires, as well as remounts and a couple of pack horses. They make their way out of town before turning north on the Kingsroad.

Ser Vance is up on crutches to bid Ser Roland farewell. "Good luck, friend. Someday I'll come back to the Vale, and I expect you will have won great honors. Just remember, your fortunes turned for the better the day you unhorsed me. But did you have to try and slice of my leg?," he says, laughing at the last.

Aranya waved Roland off. Brynden was toddling behind her, cooing at the wolfhounds. "He was too enthusiastic. It's a great honor to beat Ser Vance."

Roland laughs, "Whatever may've happened with my own fortunes in that contest, I suspect that the fortunes of the Knight of Diamonds are not in any kind of decline."

When the wolfhounds leaped playfully over her three-year old, Aranya picked Brynden up. "Nor are yours, Roland."

"Fortunately your blade curved to the left. Had it curved to the right, I would have to kill you. And that would be a shame," Ser Vance says.

"From the stories you tell, had I seperated you from the famed member I wonder what would actually remain of the Knight of Diamonds."
