"We can't have extras," Aranya said, with some heat. "It just has to be us five." She squeezed Selwyn's hand.

"I did not expect to meet them here, Lord Rhodri," Horas replies calmly. "I did not expect to be here at all, truth be told."

"So these were the men you sent to do your work? I'm sure I could have come up with better had you told me."

"You should have," Aranya said to Horas. "I sent you three ravens."

"Was it mistaken of us to be here?" Fryse questioned, looking around. "We spent a lot o' days out here, try'n to find this place." He looked right at Horas. "Don' tell me we have to go back now."

"You'll have to wait," Aranya said curtly. "Only five of us ascend this mountain."

"No," Horas contradicts Aranya, "I see no harm in extra company. You will still be paid as long as you do what you were told to do."
Horas nods at Rhodri. "Perhaps you could have, Lord Rhodri. I will be sure to think of you first in the future."

"Look at the damn tracks, woman." Fryse said, pointing at the ground before him. "Are you simple?"

"Those have to be old," Aranya said, remembering her dream. She looked at the closely, then swore. "There are supposed to be only five fucking men up there." She snarled at Horas, then at the albino. "More than five will doom us. I've seen it."

The group is startled to see a lone figure -- small enough to be a child -- descend the trail from above. Stepping through the billowing fog, the boy -- about fifteen hands high -- is dressed in a stiff leather jerkin with a white tree awkwardly painted across the chest. His mop of hair is silver, and his stunning eyes are bronze in color. A simple hatchet is tucked under his leather belt.
He walks towards the company without speaking, his expression flat.

Aranya calms down when she sees Yohn. "Nice jerkin," she says.

He stopped, looking around. "I'm goin up. I aim to finish this. Folk always said I wasn't a human anyways, maybe I won' count."
