Aranya could think of nothing to say to that. Feeling her face flush, she continued cleaning his wounds. When she was finished, she moved to put his shirt back on, but stopped and said, "This should probably be washed. And your cloak too." She cleared her throat and managed to look at him.

He was leaner than she remembered, gaunt and scarred. She knew he was only 21 but he could have passed for much older. His mismatched hair -- head and chest, and whatever else -- gave him an odd sort of look, like a man halfway between two places. His face was also harder than the gleeful young man she had grown up with at the Bloody Gate, and it looked as if his nose had been broken more than once.
Selwyn Stone looked back, and met her eyes.

Her heart was hammering. "Selwyn..." she began.

He waited silently to hear her. His look was half defiant, half defeated.

She reached out hesitantly, and pushed back his hair. Then she took a step back, swallowing. "I'm...I mean, I don't...I liked you a lot, Selwyn. A lot. But that day is done." Even as she said it, she felt her throat tighten. What is this? I never act like this.

"Aye, I know. You had some fondness for me. But I loved you. From when we were but children exiled to the Bloody Gate together, the bastards unwanted by our noble fathers." He pauses again, and clears his throat.
"Selwyn loved you. Skag Snow does not need that." He straightens himself, and reaches for his tunic.
OOC: I have got to go to bed. A dramatic pause, as it were...

Aranya stared at him, then looked away. "I had no idea," she said quietly. "I thought - I mean, we liked each other, we had a good time, but I didn't think..." her voice trailed off, and there was silence.
"You should sleep, it's getting dark," Aranya said after a while, nodding at the pallet in the corner. "We'll see to your men, and send you a hot meal from the kitchens. Tomorrow we can discuss things. War things, I mean. Or you can join us downstairs for dinner. It would be nice if we all ate together."
She managed a half smile and walked back into the room where Callen was waiting. At the enquiring look on his face, she kissed him and pushed him gently towards the door. "We've ridden a long way, and I'm hungry."

After Aranya leaves the room, Snow pulls his tunic back on, and using his cloak as a blanket, curls on the floor to sleep. Soon the wound in his side was burning again, but he clenches his teeth and keeps his eyes shut.

Callen sat awake in his bed long after Aranya had fallen asleep. His mind drifted to his conversation with Selwyn and all that had happened to him since he had taken that fateful leap from the Red Keep. After a time he stood up and opened the windows, letting the moon and the cool autum air drift into the room. He went to the table and lit a taper, and poured over the books and maps placed there. From time to time he would mutter something, "the Tyrells," or "Grandison", "the old laws", the one most often being "Bethany." He wrote letters and would rip them up as soon as they were done. Books of law in Westeros lay strewn about him. And after a time the map in front of him lay full of lines, scribbles and arrows, and a sheet of parchment had laws, and notes written all over it. As dawn finally peaked over the mountains and forrests to the east, and the taper had burned away Callen rested his chin against his chest and drifted off to sleep.

Aranya awoke as the sun rose and thumped him. "Wake up. I want to talk to you, we haven't had a chance to discuss things since all these people came."

When Skag Snow awakes, he walks into the courtyard where most of his men had camped. Urri Hastwyck, Beaumarin the Beauty and Illiam Meadow are playing at cards, and he sits back to watch, not joining the game. He does pull out a pipe to smoke, and he has a morning ale.

Callen started and looked up into Aranya's face, he rubbed his sore eyes and swept the papers to the side. "Very well, what do you wish to discuss?"

"We can win over these Black Shields," she urged. "Selwyn is an old friend of mine. Old lover too. They say they fight for justice and the like, which must mean that they're not happy with what Aemon's doing."
