Upon the third day of the tourney, it is time for the Grand Melee. While the contingents from Dorne and the Goldhands have departed, many knights remain, and twenty-four combatants are to take part of the Battle Royale, a bloody free for all of flashing swords and tangled horses. Ser Edrick Dondarrion, the champion jouster, enters the contest with the golden greatsword he won as Knight of the Blade. Many eyes are also on Ser Felwick Gower, the towering Master-at-Arms known by many to be the strongest man in the Stormlands.

Alliser stands besides Ser Brandon the Stormshield, the knight he defeated in the joust and who is now a partner in the melee. Lord Betram Selmy similarly begins giving Garrett advice on how to use his sword and shield in a melee. Garrett listens respectfully and eagerly. Tommen stands silently behind Ser Donal Tyrell and the Greatbear. He alone among his brothers has achieved nothing in this tournament, and he is keenly aware of that.

With eminent danger from the pirates in the Dornish sea, the tournament has ended prior to the melee.
