Lord Gareth Hightower arrived with his cousin, friend and follower Lyonel Costayne. The younger Hightower gave a mirthless smile as he entered, swinging his cloak off his shoulders and passing it to a servant. "Any updates on a suspect or suspects Gwayne. Has word been sent to the Mander?"

"I have written, yes, and the rest of the letters to our own lords are in the process of being written and dispatched. But no news yet," Gwayne sighed.

Karys arrives at takes a seat in the corner of the room, ignoring those present and focusing her attentions on what appears to be a bloodstained letter.
Several minutes later Jon Bulwer, the master at arms stumbles in, clearly drunk. "Yeh, wanted to see me yer grave...er grace. No that ain't...ugh, apologies my liege, my mind gets a little addled in the wee hours of the morning when I've had a few drinks too many." Bulwer chuckles as if he is sharing a joke with those assembled.

Gwayne was too tired to have patience with Bulwer. He frowned.
"We're here to discuss the death of Mace Tyrell. We need to sort this out since it has occurred on my land. We cannot bring Mace back to life but we can, I hope, provide answers as to why this happened and bring his killer to justice."

"Death? Huh? Mace?" Bulwer seemed to have been floored by this news and said no more, sitting in shock, his blank eyes moving slowly around the room.
Karys frowned looking up from her letter. Her left hand was bandaged, and as she leant forward she revealed a bruise on her right wrist. "Mace Tyrell was murdered, my liege? Why was I not informed? Have I done something offensive to your confidence in my abilities to perform the duties you alloted me?"

Gwayne sighed.
"Not at all. I was rather hoping that Gareth might have had time to speak with you. It seems not. But never mind that now. You're here now. The city has been closed off, both by road and harbour. Nobody is to leave without my permission. I have been speaking with the Small Council. Fortunately Lord Cave sent a man to attend the tourney, who has offered his assistance in this matter. I've asked Gareth to speak with Ser Mace's men."
OOC - going to have to be a bit careful here as the Small Council thread hasn't progressed much yet

Karys nodded. "Very well, is this all that is known to us?"

"At the moment, yes. It's still early, unfortunately. The killer used a dagger but there were no other signs of who he might be."

"You mean to say it was left at the scene? What manner of dagger was it?" Karys demanded. "I doubt this was a sloppy mistake on the assasin's part. It is far more likely that it is some manner of message."

"One moment."
Gwayne went to the side and fetched a plain dagger. "Valyrian steel," he said, bringing it close to Karys. "It was covered in blood when I found it. The steward was covered in blood too, because it was he who found the body. There was rather a lot of blood on Mace and on the bedding."

"This could not have been inexpensive." Karys said, stating the obvious. "It was a person of affluence that either committed this murder, or more likely sanctioned it."
She thought for a moment. "Was there anything interesting or unusual about the blood or how it was dispersed?"

"Not to my recollection. It was just messy, and it led outside the room, but I couldn't follow it far enough to get a clue of how the murderer escaped. But I agree with you. It looked like he died in his sleep, which implies that the attack was planned. But only a fool uses his own dagger, and any man with half his wits knows not to do the deed himself. So he must have hired a catspaw. but that makes matters worse."

"Perhaps. Do we have any ideas about who might wish him dead?" Karys asked. "Who saw him the eve of his death? We must establish what happened as best we can. It is possible that in doing so we may uncover something."

"I'm still hoping to find out who saw him the night before his death, but I believe there was trouble within House Tyrell. I am sure you will understand my meaning." He sighed. "I cannot speak frankly, not even here. There may be spies, given the number of visitors we have. Other than that, I really could not say. I knew him but little."
