Gareth Hightower had been informed of the news of the murder by one of the crowd and had arrived shortly after. He observed the corpse on the bed without flinching before moving towards his brother.
"There is little hope of keeping this quiet now." he said with urgency. "Let the lords know and let them take the appropriate measures of protection, until the murderer is caught. There may be other targets, perhaps even yourself, brother."

"Perhaps I will give orders for the city to be closed off until further notice. We will have to increase the guards at the Hightower itself. In the meantime, I fear we must search the city," Gwayne sighed. "A consultation with the queen and Small Council will also be necessary."

Gareth nodded. "Assign trusted guards to every door of the high nobility. The Queen, Lord Bayard and the like. And yes...close off the city. The murderer may have made his escape by now. If there are further targets he or she will still be in the city."

"Yes. Gareth, I'll arrange a meeting with the Queen and Small Council and send ravens to my bannermen instructing each of them to be wary of strangers on the road. I want you to speak with Ser Mace's men at once. Find out what you can about his doings, whether he had any known enemies and if anything odd transpired lately regarding his activities or those of his family. Izzy told me that the death of his wife was murder, and arranged by someone close at hand, so you'll need to be careful. We'll need to consult with Sain and Karys as well. They must help."

Gareth nodded. "Karys could be useful. As long as she knows her place that is. I'll have Ambrose and Lyonel do some investigating as well. Each has their own talents."

"Good. Send them to make such enquiries as you see fit."
He paused, ran a hand through his hair.
"Gods, what a bloody nightmare! This impedes the weddings too."
He frowned, thinking.
"I wonder...it was likely planned, and perhaps Oldtown was chosen to sow discord between us and our allies."

"More like opportunity." suggested Gareth. "With great lords in such close proximity and so many of them to guard, there would be far greater opportunities for an assassin to do their work."

"Perhaps. Be that as it may, we must act, and quickly. I'll deal with the Small Council and write the necessary letters. As I've said, it would help if you began investigating, so I'll be able to inform the Small council that we have set matters in motion."

"Very well. I would ask that Karys is put at my service and that where possible I have your authority to act as I see fit, saving yourself, Lord Bayard and the Queen." replied Gareth. "I will call upon Lord Bayard in order to set our investigation in motion and to ensure that we act as effectively as possible."

"Of course. Speak to Karys and be sure to keep me updated on anything you find. Just...do not be hasty, Gareth."

"Whatever do you mean?" asked Gareth with a mildly sarcastic tone in his voice.

Gwayne merely raised an eyebrow.
"Is that all for now?"

"I think so. However if you feel someone else is better suited to conducting your investigation for you, Gwayne, then say it now." replied Gareth his eyebrows knitting together.

"There is not. I trust you, but I know you can be quick-tempered. Others - Lord Royce, for example - may not know you as I do so please be careful. I hope this can be speedily resolved. Gods, this whole thing is a bloody nightmare!" Gwayne sighed in frustration.
