Grain supply? And here I thought Dorne was going to be running grain -to- Westeros. ^_^ Seriously, we didn't expect to be able to buy grain from Westeros during wintertime, when Dorne's the only place -not- covered with six foot flurries.
Oh, and yes, the Riverlands do sail 30 ships of their own. Thus spake the Houses thread.

I never quite got how the seven Kingdoms fed themselves during several year long winters. Large grain silos, or do you think they all had greenhouses like Winterfell?

I always assumed it was large grain silos. And I never got the impression that Dorne had much growing capability seeing as it's mostly desert.

Could large grain silos keep that much grain from rotting for several years. I am no expert, but I wouldn't think so.
And Callen, Egypt in the middle of a desert is where grain was first harvested in large enough capacities to feed armies.

Ya, but that was just along the Nile where the soil was good and the land was lush and green, near Alexandria, Memphis and such. And ya, grain can last for years, we have some in our silo from seven years ago that's still good.

Right, you see you always need farmers for something, besides eating on a daily basis.
Do you know Dorne doesn't have really good soil and lush greenery. Just because the people from the north think it is a sand hole doesn't make it so. Most people think of egypt the same way, and look at that.

Oh, and yes, the Riverlands do sail 30 ships of their own. Thus spake the Houses thread. True. Mainly in Seagard and Maidenpool I'd guess. I'd be amazed if they were all humungous war galleys though. Plus Maidenpool hasn't been returning Lord Blackwood's mail recently...

If you look at a map of ancient Egypt, or even a modern map, it was only a small strip of green along the Nile, the rest was desert. And from what GRRM describes the Greenblood as being, it barely stands alongside the Nile.

I agree. If Dorne was comparable to Egypt in it's ability to produce food, it wouldn't be Dorne -- which is the poorest and least populous of the Seven Kingdoms. I'm sure there is agriculture and irrigation along the Greenblood, but we're not talking grain to feed an Empire (which is what Egypt could do).

They aren't an empire though, and their population is smaller than the rest for a reason. There may be some hardships but it'd take a while for mass famine to break out. Plus with most of the Reach's forces still in KL, now's the perfect time to go grain shopping!

The whole Lannister situation is interesting too. Which way will Randal jump I wonder? Especially as he's potentially now a "guest" of Callen in KL (boy was that a mistake to ride in there)

Callen is getting a little guest-happy at the moment, unfortunately for the guests.
