ooc: How do we not already have a thread for this? It should have about 6 pages of posturing by now! A small square training yard, measuring about 80 feet in diameter, enclosed on all sides by the walls of the Red Keep, save for a few covered corridors running parallel to it on either side. Inside, there is a main circled area for combat practice, as well as several wooden or straw-filled dummies which can be moved as desired. Wooden and blunted weapons are contained in racks against the wall, as well as padded armour in various sizes.Lord Gerion Lannister walked into the yard, with his sons, Aurane and Tynian beside him. Ser Audric, the captain of his guard and a few men followed behind. "Ok son, time to show me what you've learned so far" he said, uncorking a wineskin from his waist and taking a large swallow. He takes a seat nearby as Audric helps fit both Aurane and Tynian with padded armour and finds a suitably sized blade for both. Tynian looks nervous as he hefts his wooden sword uncertainly, as Audric shows him the correct way to grip the hilt. "Should I really be fighting Ty?" Aurane asked his father, sounding unsure. His brother didn't even know how to hold a sword and Aurane had been practicing swordsmanship since he was nine. "Maybe I can show him how to swing and parry?"

"But the knights and men at-arms will fight better if they see the princess watching," Gwayne said. "They do at home, when they see my mother or sisters watching. It's cos men like women to see them as brave and strong and things."
He smiled winningly.
"Let's go find some giants."

"Tynian won't be a child forever and you were just as young when you started" Gerion replied, choosing not to mention that Aurane was much bigger at a younger age than his brother.
"Now begin!" he said, waving his arm forward. Tynian stood, eyes wide as he stood opposite his brother, nearly hidden in the padded armour which gave him an almost comical turtle like appearance. His hand trembled as it clutched the tiny wooden sword he held inexpertly.

Aurane moved towards his brother, shield high and sword ready. He gave his brother a sad look and smacked his sword, hoping Ty would drop it. If he did this often enough his father might get fed up and leave them alone.

"Ow!" Tynian yelled as the sword went flying out of his hand as it clashed with his brother's. He cradled his wrist with his other hand as he looked at his brother in panic.
Gerion sneered. "Pick it up" he said softly and Tynian scurried across and did so, wincing as his wrist hurt as he lifted it again. "Continue!" Gerion said and took another swallow of wine.

Lyssandra thought over what Gwayne said and figured that he was saying things that were truth so she nodded her head, "You are really smart. Because I like to see brave people and see that the stories that are in books are real." She looked up at her Septa, "So where can we find some giants huh?"
The septa put her hands in her pockets and one hand ran over the apple, "Well Princess I think we should be moving on elsewhere. Say goodbye to Master Gwayne." Lyssandra ground her foot into the ground unhappily, "But I was having fun!" The Septa looked at Gwayne, "Apologies Master Gwayne but we must be going, the training yard is too dangerous for a lady."

Aurane adjusted his stance and hit Ty in the shield, not hard. He tried to make it look like the attack was a proper one but didn't put a lot of force into it.
"Don't forget where your feet are," He told his brother. "And if you can watch my eyes. They will betray me more than the movement of my sword."

Gwayne sighed and lowered the wooden sword. He was not pleased to have lost a potential playmate so soon. "What if I promise to protect the princess? I can, you know. I'm almost a man grown, and my master at-arms says I'm the best sword of the boys at the Hightower. And I am going to be a squire one day, and a knight for true."

Tynian nodded nervously, looking down at his feet as he shuffled forward. The weight of the heavy shield was already dragging his left arm down, exposing his left side to his brother. Sweat began to trickle down his face, the salt stinging his eyes as it did so. They had only been sparring for a few minutes but he was already becoming fatigued.
He cautiously waved his sword forward missing his brother by a large margin, not wanting to hurt him.
"Hold up your shield and set your feet before you strike, Tynian!" Gerion barked at him, disgusted by what he was seeing. "Push him back Aurane! Don't hold back!" he yelled

"Ty can barely even stand..." Aurane said meekly, knowing his father wouldn't care.
He slashed again, against Ty's sword again, before going for his well armoured legs. He still didn't put his whole force into his strikes because he didn't really want to hurt his brother, but then thought of his father being mad at his was bad enough to encourage the boy to hit a little harder.

Tynian managed to hold onto his sword this time, if just barely, but yelped as the vibration travelled down his hurt wrist.
He cried out even louder as his brother's greater strength struck his legs and they crumpled at the impact, sending him sprawling, his sword spinning off as he landed. "I yield! I yield!" he sobbed as he held up his hands desperately.

Aurane threw his sword to the ground and helped his brother up. "Soon you won't have to do this anymore," He whispered to his brother, knowing that he might go to the Eyrie but not wanting to tell him. He wasn't allowed.
"Father, I think Tynian should really be taught how to fight by someone more experienced..."

Gerion glowered at them. "Who told you to stop Aurane?" he asked in a dangerously soft voice. He slowly got to his feet and made his way towards them.
"The fight stops when your foe is utterly defeated. If Tynian had a dagger he could have plunged it into your back when you helped him to his feet" he continued. "Mercy is a weakness and must be eradicated. The fight is only over when your enemy is dead or utterly vanquished". He picked up Tynian's sword and threw it at his feet. "Continue" he said bluntly.
Tears streaked unnoticed down Tynian's tired face as he reached down and picked up the sword, resigned to yet more pain and unable to risk angering his father any further.

Aurane could not bare to look at his brother but forced himself to. "I am sorry..." He mouthed, before closing his eyes.
He swung once, then again, keeping his blows low, or so he guessed, so that he would not hit his brother in the face. In his mind he put himself far away, fighting a dragon or a knight or a giant... but he just couldn't picture it anymore. Somehow he could not find the imagination to draw upon to picture himself as a hero.
Tears streamed from Aurane's closed eyes and down his cheeks, as he lost a part of his innocence.

Tynian actually managed to block the first hit, through sheer luck, but the second, third and subsequent blows all got through his guard and he squealed as each hit hard into him, causing welts even through the padding. Finally pushed past his pain threshold and endurance he dropped his sword and cowered on the ground, protecting his head as he sobbed.
Gerion stared on impassively and he looked pointedly at Aurane. "Finish it" he said cruelly, arms folded across his broad chest. "It might not seem like it now Aurane but you're helping your brother become a tougher and stronger man" he said firmly, his eyes flinty as he regarded Tynian sobbing in the dirt.
