Lothar nodded in affirmation towards his brother. "It is. If the Lannister's reaction to our overtures of friendship prove to be negative, then we shall seek friends elsewhere. What is it our father used to say? 'Know your enemy'." "...Better than you know your friend." Ser Lorren grimaced slightly, an effective of the wine loosening his usual spartan control of his emotions. "I cannot profess to agree with the saying, but perhaps it applies to some degree here."

"I have not quite decided yet. One of the Martells or Baratheons. Perhaps both." replied Lothar. He leaned back in his seat and surveyed the gathering. "That depends on whether any one else here has had dealings with any that perhaps we might use to our advantage."

"As I said, Gwayne was making some noise about visiting the Dornish. He ran into the little princess earlier. Perhaps you might take him to pay a formal visit at the Red Keep," Annara suggested. "That is a decent pretext for making overtures of friendship."
"And I agree with Lorren. We must assume everybody is an enemy until they prove otherwise."

Lorren sighed. "Labeling all as potential enemies may be practical, but it does make forging bonds difficult. That was, in my eyes, the greatest weakness of our father. I have no illusions that not all mean us well, and it is quite possible we can count the Lannisters among that number, but we mustn't distrust all whom we encounter. Certain men can sense distrust, even if it is perfectly disguised."

Annara looked hard at Lorren.
"Perhaps, but I am not very willing to trust the other major houses until I know them better. I would much prefer to be friends, but it may not be possible."

After listening for a long time Sain spoke up, "We should be suspicious of everyone, but not to the point of asking for trouble."

The Lord of the Far Reach reached across to re-fill his cup. "I have no intention of treating every other great house as our enemy until proven otherwise. Assuming that position will be self-fulfilling. We talk, we interact, we keep our eyes and ears open for gossip and opportunities and we act if there is need to do so. We make no promises without consultation with me. The Royces and Starks are too far away to be of any influence on any of our near neighbors in the short term. To my way of thinking the Baratheons, Martells, Lannisters, Tyrells, Tullys and even the Targaryens are all worth speaking to. The Greyjoys....." his lip curled in derision, "...have the potential to be disruptive, but I would be loathe to deal with such lowborn, unless necessary."
He took a sip from his wine. "Annara will see what can be learned from the Lannisters, I will handle the Martells and Tyrells. Lorren, I would like you to see what you can learn of the Tully's disposition towards a possible alliance with the Far Reach. Subtly of course. Sain..the same with the Baratheons. As I said make no promises. Gwayne will be fostered with Lord Tarly but Gareth and Lancel are available and Oldtown is capable of taking many fosterlings."

Annara was not happy but she nodded nonetheless.
"I will do what I can," she said. "I heard an interesting rumour the other day, one of the Florents has established himself at Court very recently. Symon Florent, his brother Gregor is wed to your sister Clarissa. Perhaps we can use that to our advantage, in time."

Sain spoke, "Another thing, although the Royces have little influence over us I was fostered there and know them well. I would not discount this advantage." he paused then spoke again slightly annoyed. "I know not how to do as you say. I am no spy nor a diplomat, nor do I know the Stormlanders personally. How do you expect me to do this?"

After finishing his cup of wine, Arthur wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and spoke: "My Lord, I've spent some time in the Stormlands a few years ago after returning from Braavos, Lord Anders and Lady Eleanor were very friendly, didn't met her son though, but with My Lord's leave I could talk with the Baratheons myself if Sain is not comfortable with it..." Arthur chewed his lower lip and raised an eyebrow.

OOC - no problem. Just going to point out that for the benefit of us all, any new 20 year threads will need to be run by Smith or postponed until the 10 year.

"Do what you can in the time we have left."

She greeted them with a smile and cups of spiced wine.
"Please be seated," she said. "I have some interesting news, if you will both hear me out."
