It was a mistake, when I was writing that I thought that Mari was part of the orgy too. I don't really have an explanation for why Steffon survived, since the game fizzled before that war was ever resolved, if I recall correctly. Still, I imagine the King banging Joanna put him in a pretty good mood, maybe he was just feeling particularly merciful on the day Steffon surrendered
