"Oh...I just wondered if they cared about me or had ever asked to have me back."
Her voice was slightly forlorn.
"I like it here but...surely Lord Hightower won't want me to stay here forever."

"Of course not. Even though you are quite welcome to stay as long as you would like. At some point you must leave here." Lymon smiled.

"I...um...I'm a bit scared of the future," she confided. "While I'm here I know everybody. But I don't know what the future will hold."

Lymon smiled at her, "Have you thought about becoming a septa. Many of the younger children rave of you, and I know the seven have let a strong candle in your heart."

She smiled back at him but shook her head.
"I thought about it, when I was little. I love the Seven well but I'm not sure I would like the restrictions such a life would entail. Most septas seem to do little but pray and teach, both of which I could do, but I have other interests too."

"And what are those?" Lymon asked.

"Well...my interest in the sword, for one thing," she said. "It's not just a child's whim, maester. I know that now. They'd never let me wield a sword again if I took vows as a septa."

"And as it stands now they are letting you wield your blade?" Lymon asked.

"The septas aren't, but only because they don't know it. Our septas here would surely be horrified if they knew I train with the sword," she said.

"and who allows you to train with swords more?" Lymon asked.

"Our captain of the guard," she said at once. "On sufferance, I know, but it's better than nothing. But I am safe, so long as I am here at Oldtown. Once I leave...I don't know what would happen."

"Did you not start out this interview speaking of you desperation to leave?" Lymon asked.

She looked down at her hands in confusion.
"I didn't say that. I don't especially want to leave. I just meant....I'll have to, some day. Joss won't want me here when he has a wife and family of his own. I suppose...the thing is, maester...I've always lived here since I was a baby, but I am not a Hightower. So I don't know where I belong."

"Until you find your home you can never be at home. I know it is difficult, but I promise together we will find that home you dream of." Lymon said encouraginly.

"Thank you. I...um...I wish there were some other way for me to serve the gods," Mariya confided. "I pray every night that the Crone would show me the way but she never answers. And neither do the other gods."
