"Well," said Rhaenys. "The matter of the Lannister marriage is most important to me. I would like to have it speedily resolved, if Lord Lannister will consent. I am happy for Aegon to wed Lord Tyberion's daughter, or, if he prefers, Ariel shall be exucsed a trial in order to marry Ser Owen. I don't mind which. All I want is the alliance."

"Should I than tell Lord Lannister, that his only choices are among Targaryen cousins? He cannot have a Princess, and he may not have both cousins, only one. Is that an accurate assessment of your position your grace?" Milo summed up, stifling a yawn which he covered with the sleeve of his tunic.

Rhaenys looked apologetic.
"I'm afraid so. I'd be glad to offer both if it were politic to do so, but I must hoard my relatives careful in the event of further alliances becoming necessary. Please tell Lord Lannister of my regret that I was unable to give him Princess Kyma as a bride for Ser Owen s like I originally intended. However, I hope you will remind him that it was he who said he did not care which of my relatives married into his house, only that someone did."

"I think surely, he meant... some princess, but in any case, if he must choose, Lord Lannister would like the female cousin, Ariel. Although I don't think it would be wrong to say that two cousins would be equal to a sister?" Milo urged, raising his eyebrows

It would solve the problem of Ariel but I cannot allow Aegon and Ariel to marry into the same family, especially House Lannister itself.
"I disagree," she said. "As I said, I may need to make alliances elswhere. But...if you choose Ariel I would be happy to help find suitable husbands for Lord Lannister's daughters. Lord Lannister has many bastards, I know. If any of them are daughters, would he consent to one of them marrying my brother Saenarys?"

"Marrying a bastard to a bastard?" Milo said with a slight smile, "If only you had a bastard sister, I might throw my own name into contention. I can ask milord if he'd consider that however."

"Please do. The alliance is necessary to me."
She knew she would have to let them have both Aegon and Ariel if they would accept nothing else, but she still wanted to keep someone free since there were other regions with whom she had no close connections as yet.

Milo smiled, and half bowed, "There is one additional favor Lord Tyberrion begs of you High Queen of the Seven or so Kingdoms of the Land Of Westeros, Daughter of Saella, Wielder of that deadly, and dark blade, and divine pleasure to the eyes of the humble and rich alike." He snorted, and added, "He begs of you a simple boon really. He needs you to legitimize the humble bastard who kneels cowering at your fine, black boots." His sardonic grin was almost catching. And he tugged at his finery.

I knew it! Why else would he send a bastard to treat with me? Almost smiling, Rhaneys looked hard at milo.
"I am not unsurprised, Ser Milo. I see now reason to refuse that particular request, but I would know why it is necessary. I cannot be seen to legitimise bastards without just cause, else they will queue from Harrenhal to Oldtown begging the same favour of me."

Milo nodded, "Of course." His voice was dry, and he turned to leave, "I will go and inform Tyberion, and my grandmother of their disappointment."

"Stay!" Rhaenys commanded. "I have consented to the request and I'll even have the papers drawn up today if necessary. Now I merely wish to know what the reason is. What is wrong with that?"

Milo smiled, "My grandmother's two sons were Hills, and her only Grandson is a Hill. She never dared marry for fear they would rip her Ladyship from her hand and gift it to her husband. She sacrificed much to remain a Lady proud." He tugged at his beard and laughed, "And every word is true even if they are bent to be more receptive to your ear." He winked audaciously.

"What was her house?" Rhaenys asked, although she thought she knew.

Milo smiled, "Bettley." He quirked his head, and smiled, "The Lion is never so dangerous as when it has a beetle at its beck and call." His eyes drop to study her rounded form, quickly, but with admiration.

It all fell into place. Rhaenys smiled at the young man.
"I see that Lady Bettley is a woman I can learn much from," she said. "It would please me to meet her some day. I, however, will not allow any man to wrest my realm from me. Lord Selwyn is my Hand and helpmate, never my master. Tell me, why does Lord Lannister concern himself with this? Is he merely concerned with preserving the lineage of House Bettley, or is there another reason?"
