"I met privately with neither man." Oswyn said, raising an eyebrow. "Perhaps you should be asking my father."

Lyssandra finished chewing and swallowed, "Good man, I respect him. It's just I rarely leave the manse, it is a little bit chilly outside. Would you agree that Martell and Baratheon should be friends?"

Lyssa's direct approach in her question made Evan accidently bite his lip as he chewed. He dabbed his lip with his napkin and cleared his throat.
"Such a setting as this", he looked at his sister,"is a good place to ask such a question. We are here together, the prominent leaders of our house without the influence of others." He sipped his wine again.

Would you agree that Martell and Baratheon should be friends?" "I would agree it is better than the alternative." Oswyn replied, wiping his mouth. Evan wiped his mouth after sipping his wine,"The alternative is what we are trying to avoid, Lord Baratheon." The Prince did not think it wise to address him by his name, the man was tense as a drum already and they had been there dining for over an hour. "Don't you think it wise that it should even be discussed. Our Houses, our lands, and our people have been squabbling for centuries. Are you not tired of fighting?" He looked at them both,"I mean is it too much to ask for peace? Is it too much to ask for a compromise?" "These moments define us. It cannot be impossible because here we sit eating and drinking. Diplomatic courtesies aside, we are exchanging with each other in a civil fashion."

"Peace has been bartered between our peoples before." Oswyn replied. "It is always short and the renewed hostilities usually bloody."
"What would make this ceasefire any different than the ones that came before it?"

"We have not fought for the last twenty years and I would prefer not to wage war needlessly. I don't seek personal gain, it would not benefit me to wage war. But if you prefer to count on history repeating itself we may also look forward to seeing a mad Targaryen on the throne, Iron Born to wage war against all the kingdoms, a mysterious enemy to invade Westeros or any other event that has made itself a theme in our history. I respect your father, he is an able commander. I am a woman and many see my fault in my birth, I should be more concerned about the Baratheons or Reachmen taking advantage of a weak woman like me. I would rather not think about all the petty reasons for war, instead I would rather have peace of mind that I could have a potential friend that does not seek personal gain. I could have misjudged your father though, though I would like to think that seeing someone in battle shows a lot of their character." She looked at them all, "I am rambling aren't I." She looked at Evan, "You're supposed to cough into your mouth to stop me when I do ramble."

"Very well, then let us talk terms if you desire a formal peace accord. I daresay we've learned not to take one another at our word." Oswyn said succinctly, in contrast to his host's rambling speech. "Grant the Stormlands a border keep, let us say Vulture's Roost, as well as one of the keeps you acquired in the Stepstones campaign, and I will agree in my father's name to a written ceasefire witnessed by gods and man lasting as many generations as you deem acceptable. Then we will have a foundation for friendship."

"I have no problem giving up a keep in the Stepstones, but a house that has been Dornish held traditionally will be too much to ask when all I have is your word. Which you say is not something that is reliable."

"My people demand security from Dornish incursions, something an additional border keep would accomplish. With your defensive passes, the loss would be miminal." Oswyn said, assuming it would come to this. "For friendship to develop, trust is needed. The Stormlands need security and the Dornish require Stormlanders not despise them."
"The keep fulfills our requirement. In return, I offer my son and heir as a ward to Dorne. In this manner he will earn his spurs and come of age learning to appreciate the Dornish rather than despise them, as is custom. When he has earned his spurs, you may choose a suitable Dornish bride for him to wed, ensuring ties that last generations. In this way, we develop trust and eventually friendship."

What he said did make sense and the offer of his son as ward was a good gesture, "That is a fair proposal Lord Oswyn and I will give the matter a lot of thought. Would your father support such an idea?"

"He has given me leave to speak for him." Oswyn said with confidence. "I am the future of the Stormlands and it is I that must ensure its security. I feel this compromise has merit."

"Of course, my dear." he replied with a gallant smile.
"If you'll excuse us for a moment." he requested, nodding in respect to Lyssandra and Evan. "Perhaps you can consider the offer in our absence."

Oswyn's gallant smile left his face as well as they entered the garden.
"The negotiations are not yet complete." he said, in as reassuring a tone he could muster. "The finer details of the agreement are not yet decided. Even the Dornish would not tear a boy away from his mother so young. We will likely agree that 8 or 9 is a more appropriate age for him to begin his service as a page. I also insisted on a suitable bride, which narrows things down to a Martell, Yronwood, or perhaps Fowler."

"A sworn shield and perhaps a companion of similar age to foster alongside." he relented, seeing the wisdom in her words. "Dondarrion or Caron must have a son of similar age and the fostering of a future Marcher lord would help seal the breech between the Stormlands and Dorne. Vultures Roost can be granted to whichever house offers up Theodore's companion, to calm any opposition."
